Kingpin Life of Crime

Has anyone out ther played this game? I know it got some bad reviews when it was first released. I beleive most of the poor reviews were biased because of the blood and gore.

Anyway, I have the opportunity to buy this game fairly cheap ($20.00) and was wondering if it would be money well spent. I own just about every other shooter game out there except this one. Just thought I would ask here before I bought it.

It's a pretty cool game, and the graphics are great for such an old release. It sells in the stores for 20.

Not a bad game is right. If you can take the gore and crude language, the graphics rock for it's time and not a bad plot to the game either.

Definitely fun and will push your system because of the 32bit colors, etc. Had lots of good time with DM with the weapons and its pretty simple to go through. The crude and vulgar language may be a bit harsh, but I've heard worse from a 9 year old.

Definitely a good buy for $20. Ran like crap when it came out because of the slower systems of the day, but runs fine on a 500MHz/GF level rig. Kind of short but has some really nice weapons, an unusual Half-Life-esque NPC buddy system, great voice acting, and some of the best and prettiest levels that the Q2 engine ever rendered. There are some morally questionable objectives though, so be warned if you're sensitive to that. A very underrated game largely due to now irrelevant performance issues.

There's nothing quite like sending your goons into a room, calmly waiting behind the door listening to the racket, then strolling in and cleaning-up whatever mess is still left with a flamethrower. I also love your goons' reactions to friendly fire - "You done shootin' me?".

As long as you're diving in the bargain bin, don't come up for air without Sin and especially System Shock 2. If you haven't played them, Sin is a good Q2-style shooter that got panned for some of the same problems that Kingpin had, and SS2 is simply one of the best First Person games of all time.

$20 is a little high, especially when PCliquidators and other places are selling better shooters for less. Actually, $20 is ridiculously high for something that old!

Since the subject has come up, I may as well ask...

Somewhere along the line something happened, and there is no money to collect. I've reinstalled Kingpin twice and it's still the same. I've even tried godmode and there is no money to be had from all victims. Any ideas?

I actually think the textures in this game are pretty state-of-the art, and it has some of the most fun DM around (hard to get enough players though!). The single-player is nothing to write home about but not bad. The violence and language are really over-the-top - this is not for the faint of heart.

The violence is certainly no worse than Soldier of Fortune, and can be toned down if you don't like it. The same with the language, which loses its shock value after about 1 level anyway.

I agree with Don Vito about the textures. For a Q2 engine game you're not going to find much better. The textures and level design are MUCH better than SOF, for example, in my opinion. The character skins are first rate. Look closely at the tattoos for example. The great texturing is part of the reason the game ran so slowly.

As for the money problem, depending on the level, sometimes there just isn't that much around. Sometimes you need to complete an objective to get it. You can always use a cheat and get some if you're really frustrated.

I liked Kingpin, and I never even played Multiplayer. I never had the money problem either.

One thing I thought about this game, is that it is really hard! I could only play on normal, hard mode and real mode were just too damn hard for me.

I had always thought the language in Kingpin was great. It adds to the amosphere and is pretty hilarious to tell you the truth.

Money bug: I'm stumped. There is no money available where I know there should be. Oh well...

I personally really enjoyed this game..yes it has bad language and gore...but this is what we want from fps shooters..right..

The graphics are ..as good as many games out there today IMHO...$20 seems high..
