Kingston DDR to a P4P800

Guys, I need some advice:

I plan to buy (today if I get my questions cleared out, or tomorrow) the Following system:

ASUS P4P800 Deluxe
Pentium4 2.4c
Gigacube ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128Mb DDR VIVO

The most important question comes ... with memory selection (surprised? )

I'm looking at 2 options here, KINGSTONingly speaking for a total 1Gb Dual DDR:

Kingston HyperX Series 184pin 16B Kit (2x512Mb) DDR433 (PC3500) DDR Ram Modules, Model #KHX3500K2/1G
Latency: CAS Latency 2-3-3-7-1T (on newegg they r listed as 2-2-2-7-1T, which I believe is wrong)

Kingston KVR400X64C3/512 512Mb 400MHz DDR PC3200 DIMM RAM CL3 (I need 2x of these to make 1Gb)

I plan to stick with 2.4GHz for a while, then latter (this year, maybe start of 2004), make some overclock to squeese the most lifetime of that processor. I'm not an overclock addict , and I don't need to push it too far, I just want a stable system.

So I need your opinion on this matters:

[1] Will I go free of trouble with those memories? Which should I choose, PC3200 or PC3500?

[2] For that future overclock, I initially planned on putting a 250Mhz FSB to have an "equivalent" 3.0c, and set DDR400 to a 4:5 ratio. But what would my best option be if I choose PC3500 instead?

[3] I understand the basics of overclocking of processor, and CPU-MEM ratios, but how does overclock work on memory modules? Can I also change the memory frequency separatly from CPU FSB?

[4] If I put SPD setting on BIOS (to get the default timings for memory installed), will I be able to see those timings on BIOS? (like read-only timings, in gray color or something, you get the idea)

Thanks

I have the ASUS P4P800 Deluixe with a Pentium 4 2.8c and 2 x 512MB Kingston HyperX (unmatched) PC3500 modules. I have run them with Performance Mode set to Standard (memory timings 2.5-4-4-8, if I remember correctly, according to CPU-z) and also with the Performance Mode set to Turbo (memory timings 2-2-2-5 according to CPU-z) with no problems.

I ran memtest86 and two instances of Prime95 for several hrs each for both the settings without any errors.

With Performance mode set to Turbo, PCMark 2002 gives CPU score of approx 6670 and Memory score of approx 9450 (average of two runs). Don't know if these are good or bad!

I was not able to locate any display of the timings for the Standard and Turbo modes in the BIOS. You can use CPU-z available at http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.htm for this purpose under Windows.

Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me the model of your DDR PC3500 dimms?

Everyone Else:

Any more opinions/experiences?

Hey that's the same lot number as my pair - did you get them at best buy? Are both modules the same lot number?

Thanks,

Hi. I have a similar setup but unable to make these to work together. P4P800 Deluxe, P4 2.8CGhz, and Corsair TWINX-3700 512MB. System is unable, keeps crashing and/or rebooting itself and BSOD. I exchange to Kingston HYPERX KHX3500K2/512 and have the identical problems. Run memtest86 v3 and it stops/hangs at 3 minutes and 2 second. Setting for memory is at 3-4-4-8. The weird thing is my 2 stick of Samsung PC2700 CL2.5 works just fine in this setup. Tried installed the memory in both options: blue slots then black slots. Does anyone have any idea ? Thanks.

Frobnitz: I purchased the pair at Best Buy during the sale they had earlier this month. Came to $107 per stick.

Obelix: I am able to run the 2x512 Kingston HyperX KHX3500K2/512 (installed in blue slots) with Performance Mode set to Turbo without any problem on my P4P800 Deluxe, P4 2.8c. The timings reported by CPU-z are 2-2-2-5. However, if I set the timings manually to 2-2-2-5 in the BIOS, I get errors in Memtest86. Unable to understand what is the difference. However, since I am a novice at overclocking, I am sure I am not doing something right. I have been able to set the Performance mode to Turbo and do a 20% overclock in the BIOS, resulting in a stable system -- no problems with memtest86 and Prime95. However, 30% overclock prevents BIOS from posting.

Try using 1008 BIOS with everything set to default (Exit Menu --> Load Setup Defaults) and see if the memory works then. If not, run one stick at a time to see if one of the memory sticks is bad. If both sticks run well in the first blue slot, you can run one of the sticks by itself in the second blue slot and see if it works there too, to make sure it is not the slot. Hope others are able to give you better pointers. Best wishes!

Hi Bawaji. Thanks for the reply. I tried 2-2-2-5 and my system was unable to post with mode turbo un-activated. I can't use the turbo mode in any setting I tried. I am not into overclocking and just want a fast and stable system at default speed. I did test each module on the first blue slot and it ran fine with memtest for about 15 minutes with no errors. Using both blue slots then it hangs at 3 minutes and 2 seconds into the test. Will try on the second blue slot. Thanks.
