Kingston HyperX vs Cosair Twinx

Well I got my board, edit: CPU (not RAM heh) and heatsink now (search my previous posts) but the Kingston HyperX (model KHX3200AK2/1G) 1024 MB Dual Channel Kit (rated at 2-3-2) is still not here.

Then I found out that I can get Corsair's Twinx 1024 MB Dual Channel Kit (rated at 2-3-3?) w/ platinum heat spreaders (model TWINX1024-3200C2PT) for even cheaper.

I tried to find this product on newegg and seek its reviews but couldn't find it. Anyone know if its just as good if not better? I'm looking to spend $230 max and want a 2x 512 MB dual channel kit that is good at overclocking--I'd like to push the FSB to 210 possibly if the Barton CPU can handle it.

Hrm found the HyperX 2-2-2-6 now for only a few dollars more than the 2-3-2-6 HyperX

Is it worth it to go for 2-2-2-6 instead of 2-3-3-6 corsair you guys think?

You will see some improvement with the tighter timings but only minimal overall total performance. It really depends on what you use your PC to do mostly. If you do a lot of encoding, then the timings will help some and the 1Gb of ram as well. If your motherboard has voltage adjustment for vdimm, you can most likely up the vdimm and get even tighter timings. I used both the HyperX and Corsair back before I went to my current HyperX PC3500 but that was back when they were using the BH5 Winbond chips. Most are using the CH5 chips right now and those will yield higher FSB but usually not as tight with timings. I am running my HyperX @ CL2-2-2-5-1T.

jhites its a multitude of things that I will use it for:

games, a little encoding here and there, visual studio & gcc for programming and a lot of prototyping with databases and speeds I suspect (lots of queries on multimillion record tables)

I feel kind of wasteful spending that much for pc3200 on one hand because already I see pc4000 and more available and I can't help but think they will be the next standard meaning my RAM won't be as futureproof... but then again pc4000 is EXPENSIVE and more than I'm really willing to pay so I guess its okay.

If I get the HyperX the 2-2-2-6 is just $6 more than 2-3-2-6 so I'd definitely get that. It is just more a question of do I want HyperX dual channel kit or crucial sticks I guess even... many people say buying two crucial sticks run fine together in dual channel mode and they are $60 cheaper than the hyperx ($190 instead of $250).

Your original topic says Corsair not Crucial. Which one is it? Not that it really matters.

DC kits are really nothing other than 2 separate sticks that have been tested together to perform at a given speed. My personal experience has been good with buying 2 separate sticks that are not DC kits. As long as you get them from the same vendor and they are the same specs you should be fine.

I would say that you could save some $ and just go with the cheeper sticks and will not really see any real performance difference in your overall usage.

I know it says Corsair but I was thinking even going cheaper (Crucial).

Then there is the whole overclocking issue. I figure the HyperX is rated up to 434 so it would be good if I push the FSB to 210 (CPU permitting) so that I have a 2300 MHz Barton. The Crucial, however, might not stand up to that and the dual channel issue isn't as guarenteed.

So I guess the HyperX has three things going for it: it can OC well (up to 434), it has tight timings (2-2-2-6), guarenteed dual channel ability to a fine degree (they use special machines apparently to best match them up).

Well, I paid $244 for my 1Gb of HyperX and have not had any regrets at all. My PC3500 HyperX is rated @ 2-3-3-7-1T using 2.5v but I am running it @ CL2-2-2-5-1T using 5:4 memory ratio on my P4 262fsb 3.4Ghz system. You can get this same ram several places for about $225 for 1Gb.

I'm looking at paying $250 for 1GB of 2-2-2-6-1T PC3200 at zipzoomfly

Crucial had great memory 3 years ago. If you want tight timings for DDR400 speeds then stay far away from Crucial. I had a stick of their pc3200 and it couldn't overclock at all, using the laxest timings I could.

I highly recommend Mushkin Level 2 PC3500 timed at 2-2-2-6. (The PC3500 is cheaper than the PC3200 at Newegg)
