KK-266R Expert Advice Needed

I have just put together a system: KK-266R, 128 Megs Muskin Rev 3 (150) Taisol 760092 HSF, & a cheap AGP card (ATI Expert 98 8megs) I'm currently running TBird 1000@ 1350. 150x9.0 voltage 1.70 (bios states 172.) Board is rev 1.2, Bios 3-7-01. Current temps are: (Case Open) cpu: 41degrees C, system 27degrees C. I have tried all kinds of combinations, but each time I raise the FSB above 150, it will not post. Is the problem the cheap video card? Or can it be something else? Please throw some knowledge my way.

It could be the voltage. T-Birds are supposed to run at 1.75V, not 1.70V.

I tried changing the voltage several times, each time I go to 151 she will not post at all.

This may sound odd, but its probably the RAM, i know you people think mishkin ram is some thing it isnt, if it says CAS2 that usually means CAS2 @ 133 so it will be CAS3 @150 or so, basically that is what was happening to my comp, now i have CAS2 @ 150 ram, supposedly will hit 166 or more...but im happy as it is.

The ram is CAS 2, Rev 3 (150) you may be right, but I cant believe its the ram.

Have you removed the Northbridge heatsink, applied thermal compound, and installed a fan? Give it a try if you have not already.

Hehe...I feel your pain, buddy, and let me tell you my story...

KK266-R w/ PCI ATI Xpert 128 (16M) causes all KINDS of video glitches when hardware performance tab is set anything above the second option. I sifted through 100+ threads at amdmb.com and finally found 2 other people with this same problem. I have a Radeon LE coming this week.

Anyway, here is my point. Mine is PCI, not AGP, but we ARE using the same video GPU. Also, mine only caused video problems, not POSTing problems. So, your card MIGHT be a source of problems (pretty helpful, huh?).

So, I agree with the RAM suggestion. I have Kingmax TinyBGA rated at 166 (6ns) running at 150 at the Fastest setting in 4/26 BIOS. I haven't even tried to go beyond that, yet, since I'm waiting for a fully-functional video card. By the way, why aren't you using the 4/26 BIOS?

I'm running the ram at 5-2-2-2 4 way (Think I will lower it to 2-2-2 & see what happens. I kind of thought it was the video card & I too am going with the Raedon LE. For now I'll just have to suffer with 1.350MHz

Oh, yes have not messed with the Northbridge chip yet.(no fan no AS II)is it necessary?

Should I flash the bios? Will this fix anything, if its not broken don't try and fix it - right.

DollarBill, to be honest, the only reason I flashed the BIOS is because it was the most popular BIOS being used to date, based on my research. I never benchmarked "before/after", so I couldn't tell you if it helped. I just figured the empirical evidence from a pretty large cross-sample of KK266R overclockers on amdmb.com was enough for me to "trust" it. I guess my point of view is that the majority of those people are probably smarter than I am concerning the intricacies of the BIOS, did the benchmarking, etc., for them to almost universally recommend it. Does that make sense?
