Wasn't really mentioned in bestbuy threads, but Best buy has Klh 8" bookshelf speakers regularly $40 each for $10 each right now. Decent quality although bit weak on bass for a 8". The vocal range is very strong and they look pretty nice so they'd be good for a home theater and they're video shielded. I got a pair and they sound ok. Three sets were grabbed as I was thinking about mine so if you want em move yo butts !

EDIT:

Forgot to mention that they have gold plated banana capable binding posts.

Anybody pick these up? I was looking at them today and wondered how the quality was. BB didn't have them displayed conviently took them down because of the $60 sale on them, normally $80, now $20 for the pair till Sunday. I was thinking of getting them and pairing them up with a medium grade receiver to give to my mom and sister to use.

Weak on base and not incredibel on highs, but excellent in mid vocal range. Would be great in surround package with a sub. They definitely won't disappoint you for the price as just bookshelf speakers. I'm so used to my sub and bass reflex setup that most bookshelf system seem weak to me. If nothing else, you could make an ice gift out of pairing these with just a generic shelf system from walmart. Just replace the cheapo speakers with these. Most of the sound quality from systems is determined by your speakers anyways. Could even add in a 50 buck sub and have a decent surround package with 8" for under 100 bucks. They won't blow audiophile away but they won't disappoint you either.

I don't know anything about audio and speakers - stuff like surround sound, 5.1, 4.1, etc; and I'm not an audiophile. Would anyone still recommend this to replace my standard TV speakers?

They will be better than your built in TV speakers, but in order to run sound from your tv, your tv would have to audio outputs to go to a receiver.

Giv us a tv model and we can check out how to hook it up. As far as will they be better.. almost exclusively , yes they will be. They are magentically shielded supposedly too, so no or very little magentic effects on your tv. I bought a pair of ancient 8" fishers at a yard sale for 14 total once and we are using them right now on our RCA TV. Even the ancient speakers sound infinitely better than what was on the tv. It also helps because the tv speakers were on the back sides of the tv , so external speakers can help direct the sound better. I'd wager that just about anyone could find a use for these or someone who could use them.

That is not necessarily true. Some older TVs especially have amped outputs for external speakers. Cheaper models, older models, and prob a good amount of RCA, samsung, etc. should have the jacks.

Tbones -

These are lower end speakers but are good replacements for generic/factory speakers that came with at tv/stereo.

KLH is the cheapest audio brand that Best Buy sells. Like people were saying in the post: it's not professional level stuff, but it does sound pretty good.

If you want to be blown away, listen to the JBL setup at BB. Now that's some beautiful sounding stuff. "Just" hundreds of dollars more expensive =)

Not all that much more expensive for JBLs, IF (and that's a big IF) you can find a BB that still has some of the Series I speakers. Last year's model, but pretty much identical to the Series II. If the HT manager is on the ball, he'll mark these WAY down just to get them off his inventory.

IIRC, J&R also has some Series I available on the cheap......

Giv us a tv model and we can check out how to hook it up.

It's a Toshiba..just a normal tv. I only saw those common RCA composite yellow/red/white jacks on the back of the TV. But the DVD player has an optical, digital audio plug though. Can I use those speakers for either TV or DVD?

No, you have to have a receiver to go with the speakers, you cannot just plug the speakers into the TV.

Two of these, wired in series (or is that parallel) make a fairly decent center channel speaker til you can afford the better stuff, since, as mentioned, these are strongest in the voice frequencies.

I have a Toshiba VCR that my TV is hooked up to. I have an Apex mono tv. I also hook up my new xbox to the VCR. To get better sounds from the XBox I hooked up a pair of wireless stereo headphones to my VCR's RCA output.

I was wondering how I can hook these up to my VCR, so that I can get stereo sound from my VCR, cable, and XBox using these speakers?

Any audiophile / expert here care to explain to me? It has to be cost effective and also not too complicated...

I was wondering if you could do this. I figured it would work, I just wasn't sure of how to wire it. Can anyone give a quick rundown on the hookup? Is it series or parallel? Red to red, white to white, everything else goes under the screw......?

All I still need is the center speaker, but after buy a new receiver and a new sub (to go into a new, read heavily mortgaged, house), I was hoping to hold off for a while on getting one of them fancy store-bought center speakers.

And for anyone trying to hook these speakers up to a TV or VCR without using a reciever, just grab a good set of powered computer speakers the next time one of the office stores runs a sale/rebate/coupon/PM.......

I had them in my cart, but got caught up doing something else and forgot about them until this morning. Went back in and it changed the price to the new $70 one. Oh well, my fault for not paying attention I guess. Congrats to those who got in on them though, and let me know if you have any extras, heh.

I'm using 2 of the 5" sony's for my center channel. I did this because I got 4 of them for under $100 and Sony's cheapest center + surround package (with cheapo crappy full range surrounds) was more than that. So instead I have a nice center with 2 woofers and tweeters and 2 surrounds with a woofer and tweeter. Sounds awesome in surround, but you may to fiddle with the center volume. Also make sure that the speakers are video shielded (as the KLH claim to be). Just buy a little splitter box if you want to play it safe from radio shack. Then you hook positive to positive and neg to neg for each speaker and for the receiver. Requries basically 3 wires and the box.... takes a minute to do.

Radio Shack Splitter/Selector for $10

You could technically splice some RCA ends onto the speaker cables from the klh's and just plug them into the R and L RCA jacks on the VCR. However, the outputs on VCRS are generally not powered so you won't have much volume out of the speakers and since vcr's don't have volume adjustment, no way to change the volume. You're gonna need to splurge on a receiver.

Mindstorm, you may want to check out something like this. 3 A/V inputs with RF modulator built in. Then you can pick up a set of Logitech Z340's for $27.88 + shipping at amazon after rebate and have a nice sounding setup for under $60.
