Klipsch ProMedia 4.1 Question

I'm currently trying to decide between the ProMedia 4.1 and 2.1, and was wondering if it would be ok to just get the 4.1's and use it as a 3-piece setup? I'd like to save some desk space right now by having just a 3-piece setup, but I'm thinking I might one day decide to go back to using a 5-piece set. I currently have two 18" lcds, 6x8 pen tablet, scanner, zip250, printer and a few other devices on my desk, and I don't have any other place to put the rear speakers. Would a set of ProMedia 4.1's with two satellites connected to the front output jacks (and front line-in jack of my sound card) work and most importantly sound the same as the 2.1's? If not, I'll probably just go with the cheaper 2.1's. Thx!

You'll be fine just running the 4.1 set without the two rear speakers attached. Less load on the amplifiers that way. You can always hook the the two rears when you have space....or when you really wanna rock! Go for it.

MichaelD~

So they should sound pretty much identical to the 2.1's with the rear speakers unattached right? And is the setup pretty much the same (i.e., are there more cables running everywhere? i have the fps2000 now and can't stand all the audio cables)?

darthmango~

I thought about doing that but I doubt I'd ever have room for two subwoofers

Call me crazy, but I read in a review somewhere that there was a bug in the 4.1's producing sound in the mid range that was confirmed by Klispch and corrected in the 2.1's.

So why not take darthmango's suggestion? Personally, I wouldn't buy 'em. I mean, who needs all that power?

You wouldn't buy them at all or just not the 4.1's? I'm not sure what other brand I'd consider (maybe Monsoon). I just want to spend $300 or less on a set that sounds great and is black.

If what you said is true though, I may just go ahead and get the cheaper 2.1's. Maybe something better will come along by the time I want to upgrade.

It was the .v2-400 that had a slight dip in the midrange. fixed in the 4.1. and 2.1's.
Not using the rear speakers would be fine, but won't lessen the load on the amp's, as each channel has it's own amp.

You could allways buy one pair of 2.1's now, and get annother pair later. You would end up with 4.2's for like $360.

I would get the 4.1 myself.

Thanks Waycool, you're right. I actually knew that....just had a brain fart! Waycool is correct in everything he said. The midrange dip was caused by a poorly designed crossover in the original V2-400 set. That has been fixed w/the 4.1's

Yes, the 2.1's are cheaper, but I'd get the better set anyway. Why? Number one; you'll never be dissappointed buying the best and Number two; if you want 4.1 sound later (and you will!) you'll already have the rest of the set. Also, resale value will be cheaper.

If you are a big gamer and thoroughly enjoy surround sound (I do...I keep my 4.1's at about 1/2 volume while playing UT/Q3A/HalfLife and they ring afterwards!) you'll not be dissappointed with th 4.1s. They are the best PC speakers you can buy for under $400.

If you only game occaisonally and mostly listen to tunes, then the 2.1's may be better for you. Good luck, whatever you decde.

The 4.1 in 2.1 mode would be better actually.

60Watts/Sat, 160watt for the sub.
The 2.1 would have 35 and 130, and the sub isn't dual driver.

And the 4.1 would slam a 4.2 set around to.
Again, 60watts/sat not 35, and a single 160watt dual driver sub is better than 2 130watt single driver subs. Lower low end, and bass in non-directional so this putting one sub behind you stuff is nonsense.

The 4.1s will work great in 2.1 mode.
