I'm too much of a audiophile to keep the set I bought a while back. The only issue I had was that the speakers would have a low hissing sound through the analog inputs.

How was the bass and sound quality on them? How much of an improvement would they be over my Z640's?

I read even an Audigy 2 doesn't give you a digital 5 channel sound. Not sure what the ideal set-up would be for for a PC using this system. Until I find out, I'll hold of buying this.

The price is quite hot though. I saw a refurbished version of these on Klipsch.com for $99 ( with shipping it was closer to $125). So $150 for a shipped retail sounds good.

Good price, but as above poster said, these only take Digital inputs for 5.1 sound so unless you have a Soundstorm, these aren't going to work for gaming.

Thankfully I do have a soundstorm and love these speakers.

How I can get Soundstorm ... NForce4 doesn't come with it. Is there a sound card out there that allows full 5 channel digital output.

Yes, HDA (Bluegears) X-Mystique and Turtlebeach Montego offer DDL (Dolby Digital Live) now.

Audigy cards (and other non DDL digital out cards) will only get you 5.1 real surround from things that are Already DD encoded (like DVD movies).

These speakers have PrologicII and 5 channel stereo though, so on non-DDL cards with digital out, you can still have all the speakers play, but it will not be true surround like was intended for gaming.

X-Mystique
Montego

I have the X-Mystique hooked up to my receiver and it works well.

Any suggestions on a 939 PCI-E mobo that would work here, or any other options as far as sound cards? Looks like a hot price on this set! Thanks for any info in advance!

Thanks OP!

Well, that handsome young fellow who suggested the X-Mystique or Montego is talking about cards that would get you surround sound in games.

If you want a 939 motherboard and true surround sound, then those are pretty much your only options.

If you don't care so much about games, you can get true surround sound from movies and stereo from music with a cheaper card.

A Chaintech AV-710 will output PCM stereo for music. You could listen to music in stereo or use some processing modes on the speakers to get it to play from more than just 2 speakers and the sub.

The Chaintech will also send a DD stream from DVD movies. You'll get true surround sound from things like DVDs that are already DD encoded.

So...

Chaintech for music/movies as intended and games in "fake" surround

Montego or X-Mystique for music/movies/games as intended

Yep, you need a card that can do Dolby Digital Live, which is either a Soundstorm motherboard, the Montego, or the X-Mystique.

I have these speakers and love them. They don't have quite the bass boom of the Promedia's, but the quality is excellent and frankly, they're way better looking

I have a HP A1030N system with built in sound that has digital out (2 RCA female sockets). The motherboard is some sort of ASUS apparently (according to Crucial's online detection system) but I don't have any more info. Any idea if that board will support these speakers in digital format?

Sounds like you have a digital coaxial output. Looks like this set has an input for that, but you're not going to get surround sound in games from it unless you have a DDL output (which is doubtful).

You'll get stereo for music and surround sound from movies though.

If you have the right sound card (and even if you don't) this is one hot deal. You won't find a better 5.1 setup for <$100 shipped.

Keeping in mind the limitations everyone mentioned above (including yourself).

A rehash in laymen's terms:
Remember analog will only ouput 2.1 with these speakers. And digital will only output "true 5.1" if the audio is already encoded in 5.1.

In other words do your research before plunking down the cash on these speakers. Otherwise $99 is a decent deal considering they normally costed $130 @ Amazon.

These would be great for a console or even a cheap alt as a home theater set up. Im sure these will smoke any $100 durabrand HT sound system. granted no DTS but should rattle the walls and sound better.
Thinking I may need a set for my bedroom and second living room
