Klipsch Promedia v.2-400 or Cambridge DTT3500

Why is the Klipsch Promedia v.2-400 system so superior? Why aren't people dissuaded by the lack of a digital decoder? I'm in the market for some new speakers, and these definitely seem to be up there, but I'm getting an SB Live Platinum, which might go better with the Cambridge DTT3500 (companion product?), despite the Klipsch's superior performance.

I personally do not like the fact that it's not digital and doesn't have a DD5.1 decoder. But the most convincing feature is the Klipsch's pure powre - 400watts RMS is simply outstanding for computer speakers. I personally would go with the DTT3500 - I have the DTT2500 and I love em!

Digital is extremely overrated. There are many, many more important factors in the quality of speakers.

Now, I'm not a hugh Klipsch fan (I prefer the Boston Acoustics' BA-4800's, myself) but imho, it's not even a competition between those and the DTT's.

What I really like about the DTT3500s is the superior connectivity. My sound setup does not need to be super powerful, as it is for a dorm room. I like the multitude of inputs that the 3500s feature, particularly a PS2 or DVD player. I realize that the 3500s are not designed to be a "home theatre system" but again, with a dorm setting in mind, can anyone argue in favor of them?

Get yourself the newer promedia 4.1 speakers with the changed crossover or the ba-4800s. I wouldn't even think about any of creative's speakers...

The digital input means jack as far as sound quality.

Cambridge Soundworks or Boston Acoustics? Which package is better ihave around 100 to spend. I heard walmart has great deals on the Cambridge 90 bucks...

How much are the Klipsch? I don't know jack about computer speakers, but Klipsch and BA make some fine HT speakers. Especially for the price. I also agree that DD can be overrated, I have a complete HT setup, what good is dolby digital on my computer? No speaker package can compare (obviously) with a good HT setup.

The Klipschs are great, period, and to some degree you get what you pay for. There is a reason the price has stayed static for so long, while the BA prices have gone into the basement. Each person has a different preference, but I for one really like the punchy, loud Klipsches.

Don_Vito, I owned the Klipsch V2-400s, and they never worked right from day one! Talk about a lemon of a product. I was so pissed, I got rid of mine, then bought the BA4800s. I've had them since April of 2000, and I have yet to experience one problem with them! If you want to pay inflated prices, that's fine with me, but I have better things to do with my money.

Well, you have my sympathies, but obviously your experience is the exception, rather than the rule. It hardly seems fair to blame an entire product range, and surmise that it suffers from "inflated prices," just because you had a bad experience.

If you want 5.1 digital audio for a small room I would get the Yamaha TSS-1's over the DTT3500. Although they are less powered, they are still plenty loud for a dorm room. Plus they are cheaper and include DTS decoding as well as DD5.1, and an optical input for your PS2. Just my $.02.

Price aside, I've had the chance to listen to both the BA4800s and 4.1s side-by-side. Yes, while the Klipsch have a slight edge in the high-range, I still think that the BA4800s are better for music.

I got the Klipsch v2.-400s for $199 at BeastBuy when the newer ones came out.

If you are a gamer and/or like the "theater experience" watching DVDs the Klipsch can't be beat (for the price).

They are NOT audiophile speakers. But then, for multimedia speakers (mp3s/games/dvds), who really cares about sonic purity & accuracy?

The golden-ear snobby hi-fi tweaks will have a much nicer system for their LPs and home theater, anyway.

Bummer. Couldn't you take advantage of the excellent Klipsch warranty and superb customer service? Or did you get them from an "unauthorized" source?

Got them directly from Klipsch.com back in October of 1999. It took Klipsch's "Excellent" Customer Service two weeks to authorize UPS to ship them back. I was so pissed at having spent $280 for such crappy speakers, that I didn't want to mess with Klipsch any longer than I had to.

I got the other model of cambridge last december for around $200 shipped. I did it because I want a general solution for my computer and home theatre 5.1. Im ok with them and they are fine in my experience for music that can get pretty loud and I guess home theatre as well without cracking. I can turn up both to sufficient levels which is good. For some reason the sound is very low when watching dvd's compared to computer and even music being played on the dvd. I have to turn it up half way just to hear the words.

The sound and everything is ok but im not a speaker nut so don't know what Im missing. The only issues I really have is the subwoofer sounds like crap if you turn it up too much. It will start to fizzle and distort the other sounds which sucks. I like rap music and cannot turn up the sub high going say past half volume or it sounds crappy. Same with dvd movies if the volume is too high it gets blurred. This is too bad but I guess I really shouldn't have expected so much with cheap speakers. I really like bass and didn't want to spend much so the setup is acceptable to me.

So what did you do? Did you toss them out or what?

Were they "crappy" because they were inherently defective (i.e. - offended your golden ears - they are known to cause earbleeds in audiopiles) or was the pair you bought specifically defective?

I never had trouble with Klipsch service.
