A Republican congressional candidate in California fended off a knife attack on Sunday — and an election sign helped the candidate keep the attacker at bay, authorities said.

U.S. House of Representatives hopeful Rudy Peters was “minding his own business with his family” at his campaign booth during the Castro Valley Fall Festival just before 4 p.m. when a man came up and began insulting Peters’ political party and the president, Sgt. Ray Kelly, a spokesman for the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, told McClatchy.

That’s when the interaction grew violent: The man making disparaging comments, Farzad Fazeli, 35, became “aggressive,” pulled out a switchblade and tried to attack Peters, the sheriff’s office said. Kelly said Fazeli may have also thrown a glass mug at the candidate.

But the knife malfunctioned, “in part because Mr. Peters was able to defend himself and stop the suspect from deploying the knife,” Kelly said.

No one covers what is happening in our community better than we do. And with a digital subscription, you'll never miss a local story.

Kelly said Peters used a campaign sign to defend himself during the struggle.

“You’re dealing with a knife — a deadly weapon,” Kelly said. “Anything you can use, including a sign, would be a good option. It would provide you some level of protection.”

Eventually, Peters managed to bring Fazeli to the ground, Kelly said. He added that Peters was defending himself, and did not attack Fazeli.

Fazeli then fled the scene and “may have changed his clothes to disguise his identity,” Kelly said. But deputies were nearby at the fair and detained him.

“We found a switchblade knife on his person,” Kelly said.

Fazeli was arrested on charges of possessing a switchblade, brandishing a weapon, criminal threats and felony assault, according to the sheriff’s office. Kelly said Fazeli remains at the Santa Rita Jail.

No one was seriously hurt during the encounter, the sheriff’s office said.

Peters is running to unseat Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell in California’s 15th congressional district, which runs east of San Francisco Bay.

Splendid. Just what the country needs.

awful that this keeps happening. Maybe the GOP will stop the race-bating language of how evil immigrants and brown people are? I don't want to see these guys get stabbed or shot, but a wise man might accept that they really need to stop poking the bear.

So the GOP is partly to blame for this?

No further questions. Just cynicism. Become a democrat or don't complain when people try to stab you. Brilliant.
Of course that's the conclusion you draw as you are incapable of understanding anything beyond black and white. Here's a tip. Read zin's post again.

Desperate people do desperate things. They find someone to blame. When a party so callously passes policies that take away health insurance, social safety nets, demonize a group of people as criminals or terrorists, then yes they are partly to blame. Not condoning violence, but if a father loses a child due to lack of health insurance for instance and he can, in his mind draw a direct relationship to a policy that took that health insurance away, then I can see him losing his mind and wanting to take it out on someone. That is not the case here possibly, but just an example.

Oh and "thoughts and prayers"

You guys can't see through the partisanship even so far as to condemn such attacks without qualification? You can't resist the temptation to append "but he had it coming"?
Nobody said that and I was responding to your specific question.

You really don't understand things being said to you do you? Each message you ascribe a belief to me that I haven't addressed.

See, you say he is wrong, but, people are literally saying yes. He is apparently both wrong and right even though those are mutually exclusive. How did that happen?

You think it's permissible to extend responsibilities for crimes beyond those that directly caused it? Politicians not paying for your health insurance aren't responsible for your health problems. Your health is your responsibility. It doesn't cease to be just because politicians wish or wish not to pay for it. That's ridiculous.

This is the same foolishness we heard when Scalise was shot. He had it coming.

No one said become a democrat or get stabbed. Can you show me where they did? That's what I was responding to.

Are any of you capable of addressing what is actually said by people on here?

I said "become a democrat or don't complain if you get stabbed" in response to zin saying, "Maybe the GOP will stop the race-bating language of how evil immigrants and brown people are? I don't want to see these guys get stabbed or shot, but a wise man might accept that they really need to stop poking the bear."

Do you have a better interpretation? Do you really think that republicans could sufficiently atone for their sins against leftist orthodoxy without renouncing their party? To be a republican is to be a racist, or at least make common cause with them, in democrats' eyes.

Again: maybe stop poking the bear? It's all well and good to blame the perpetrator for making the decision to turn to violence, but I will never have sympathy for the victim who has spent who knows how long inciting that very violence against themselves.

Now as for this specific GOP hopeful, I don't know anything about him or if he is the same sort of shitbucket that is typical among the GOP, but it comes with the association. That is simply a statement of the observable fact of where we are today, and where this kind of rhetoric has brought us. It's unfortunate if this dude is alright and got assaulted only because his compatriots represent the abject worst that humanity has to offer, but that is simply where we are.

If you don't like that this is where decades of public animus directed against minorities by the GOP has brought us, then fix your own. Hey, that's only what the GOP wants the blacks, the muslims, and the abused women to do anyway, right?

Do you agree that muslims should do this?

What does that have to do with the actions of this one individual? Some people are looking for an excuse to act out. Others feel pushed to do so. No one is saying all should do anything.

We are taking about one person. Not a group.

Hang on here. I was told that Americans were heroes when they stabbed the British when they tried to tax them without representation. Now here we are with a President who was put in office by and is working for the Russians, who make the British look like angles, and it's Republicans who are protecting him from impeachment in violation of their oath to the Constitution, and you say they shouldn't be stabbed? You have a very odd, perhaps a Russian perspective, no? I guess you're the kind of person who would turn his head if a madman was burning your country down. You seem to me to be like a person who would be just fine if a collection of Zombies passed a law that said it was illegal to be sane.

A word to the wise. Stay inside when when Zombie stabbing time rolls round. Somebody might mistake you for one or a Republican, which would be the same thing. You should know better than to volunteer to be nuts.
