Wow, didn't realize that the 8/16GB of local DRAM was on-package!

Plus a nice little reveal about upcoming Broadwell based Xeons:
The usual serial and scalar jobs will still run better on ~1 TFLOPs 16-core Broadwell Xeon E5 v4 at the same time, but, well, at least there will be a choice of two approaches, or easy combining them into a single system with common code running on both.

Sounds like they are coming out within a year of Haswell Xeons. I wonder if HW-E(P) and BW-E(P) will share the same socket?

Add this to CPUs, and IGPs will fly. And no more memory slots.

This is what's exciting me. Really fast IGPs, and no RAM slots eating up motherboard space. We're going to get some really awesome compact gaming PCs coming with this sort of tech. I'm just worried about price- there's a reason Intel are rolling it out on HPC chips first...

And 500GB/sec. nVidias Volta will feature the same in 2016-2017. Add this to CPUs, and IGPs will fly. And no more memory slots.

Yes it would be a huge boost to IGP's; but as NTMBK hinted, I think it'll be a several years b/4 we get on package DRAM at a reasonable enough price for consumer grade CPUs.

//wild speculation:
I wonder if MCDRAM will make it onto server CPUs as a huge victim cache @ 14nm. If so, HEDT would be re-invented if Broadwell or Skylake would have an 'E' model with on package DRAM configured as system memory. HEDT systems would truly become the penultimate PCs before MCDRAM make it to mainstream CPUs.

Hmm, never thought that the end of dGPUs could come b/4 the end of this decade, but now I wonder.

If Intel does this, they will crush AMD into the ground unless a miracle occurs @ GF. Moving away from being an IDM is looking to be the death knell for AMD - in giving up their Fabs for 'freedom' they lost control over the process parameters that mattered most to them (and they still are not free because of the WSA).

Well, it'll be expensive as hell at first. But on n+1, or n+2....

Though Volta is claimed to be at double the BW at 1TB/s and its stacked. That is a generation away though.

David Kanter is saying that the entire Silicon stack for Knights Landing is going to take somewhere about 1/5th the space of the 300mm wafer, and the costs for the memory would be $500 alone.

Another is saying 1GB is 300mm2.

Yea, it won't be anytime soon.

The memory is not much different from regular memory. Its simply stacked. And its not made on the same process either.

2Gbit DDR3 on 23nm process takes up 30.9mm2. So 8GByte is 988.8mm2. Yet it sells for 50$ as a DIMM.
