Anyone have any recommendations on a small lightweight daily carry knife? Currently on my second Kershaw Chive and love it, but always looking for something better. Anything else around 2" blade, preferably one-hand open? I saw some from spyderco like the Kiwi and grasshopper, but reviews says quality control is bad, and not easy to open with one hand. Almost too cheap too, I wouldn't mind spending $75-100+ if it was worth it. Maybe something with Titanium handle, would help reduce the weight. Removable clip would be a must too if it had one like my chive, as I just slide the knife in my pocket with my keys, can hardly tell it's there.

Hmmm I like the Dragonfly 2, only 1.2 oz! And $50 on amazon to boot.
The Manbug isn't bad either. Thanks for the options!

I'm kind of partial to the Kershaw "leek"

This.

I've been carrying this exact knife since the late 90's.

I've lost a few of them over the years but always replace it with the same thing.

A few times I've tried going to a different option but always come back to this.

I would really like to find a folder with a 6 - 8 inch blade for a total length of 12 inches or so. I have run accross a few but they were all flimsy construction.

I don't know of anything currently being produced that large.
But you might be able to find a Camillus Cuda Maxx or a REKAT Sifu on ebay.
Both were big ass folders with almost 6 inch blades I think

I checked them out online on both their own sites and distributers but couldnt find anything with a blade bigger than 4 inches.

I don't personally like Cold Steel knives, but their Espada series are the biggest folders on the market (at least that I know of), and use a lock (the Tri-Ad lock) which is arguably the strongest available. The Espada XL has a 7.5" blade! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwimJteCPjI&feature=related

Somebody want a folder with an 8inch blade you MIGHT have to go custom for that. We might be talking $1000= for that.

kershaw is a great low cost knife...many over think their knife purchases and many can get more bang for buck if willing to sharpen more often.

an 8" folding blade is an insane size...carrying a kabar equally so for most.

Have always wanted a Szabofly, but never bought one. How do you like the balance of the SpyderFly?

I really couldn't say. It's a knife I just bought to have in the collection.
I suck at tryin to flip around a bali, just don't have the aptitude for it.

Having returned to the Boy Scouts when my son came of age, I find myself looking for a folder that is as sturdy and as big as a fixed blade. My current favorite knife is a 2000 Marine Kabar, for which the blade is about 8 inches long. Unfortunately the Boy Scouts do not allow fixed blade knives on their outings. Has anyone come across a larger tactical folder with sturdy engineering?

thanks

I doubt you're going to find a serious folder that large. Few makers go much more than about 4 inches.

If I may - Scouts never intentionally put themselves into survival situations. And most often they use established campgrounds. Marked Trails... and almost all of the leadership have been to the same places several times. Certainly that's the case here in the Northeast. So it's not like you're going to need a large chopper to baton firewood or construct an emergency shelter. It may be different elsewhere, but given the current litigious world we live in I tend to doubt it.

Yeah... Sh*t happens, but remember: They're wandering around in the woods with other people's children, and are ultimately accountable for everyone's safe return. The area will be known. Events will be planned. etc etc etc...

My advice: Bring a medium camp or hunting axe (if allowed), a heavy 3.5~4" folder, and a Leatherman~like tool. {I happen to like the Victorinox Swiss tools a little better than the Leatherman brand} Your Scoutmaster will be able to get you the specifics on what that troop has for it's own gear, and what you Should and May bring to supplement their loadout. The troop I used to run with had their own axes and saws, for example. And they closely regulated who was allowed to use what tools. Basically if you weren't an adult or had earned the requisite rank & merit badge, then the heavy tools were off limits.

Those are pretty sick.

You necro'd this just to say something stupid?

ANYWAYS

I found a site that sells Microtech knives at a reasonable price, but I'm not sure if I'm actually allowed to own them. Virginia is wide open with guns but very strict with knives.

Autos are verboten here in NY but I've never let that stop me from buying them. I just don't carry them in public and stick with the manual versions when out.

Yeah I think most online companies will ship to any state but they expect you to know the laws.

Many dealers but not all will only sell autos to active military and LEO's. They want you to fill out a form and provide a copy of your Id before selling to you. The trick is to find the ones who will turn a blind eye to who they sell to. Of course there is also the private sale route.
