Knockouts in movies. Knocking someone unconscious with no lasting damage.

In movies, people sometimes knock their opponents out in such a manner that their opponents don't die and have no lasting damage. They just become unconscious (and wake up later). Is this something that can be done in practice? What kind of blows render a person unconscious without lasting damage?

A movie blow.

But most blows to the head won't kill you. Unless your skull is cracked open you should be A-OK in a few hours/days. Check out boxing knockouts on Youtube.

yeah but every once in a while they do.

buddy got sucker punched, landed on the ground, woke up, and went to the hospital and died 6 hours later.

Yeah, if you get fluid on the brain you're pretty screwed. Hitting his head on the ground didn't help.

I've been knocked out a few times in boxing and I've always been 'OK'. Typically I have a headache for a while and I feel 'tired' for a few days.

Now being choked out is different. I've been choked out at least a dozen times if not more. You just wake up wondering WTF happened and keep on trucking.

Do you do MMA fighting or are you just kinky?

Saw a movie where a wizard stabbed a fire demon with a sword and killed it. What kind of sword can put out a fire by stabbing it?

Movies have these scenes where someone gets knocked out and hours/days later they wake up. If you get knocked out and don't come to in a few seconds - you are pretty much brain dead.

Yes, I've seen movies with dragons, and spells, and aliens, and demons. I wasn't insinuating that what they show in movies are necessarily real. I was just inquiring if you can and how you can knock someone out without causing lasting damage, if this period of unconsciousness would last for a while (longer than a few seconds) etc.

KO with a hit to the head = brain damage, every time. Lots of times it's very minor, but it's there and it adds up.
KO with asphyxiation, loss of blood flow, etc, usually doesn't cause any damage. Just do this, easy KO.

Also beware of the movie judo chop, which can usually disable anyone instantly.

Cold lightning treatment on the sword will do the trick.

Saw one of those in The Last of the Mohicans (1936) when I watched it on Amazon Prime just the other day.

The British officer guy non-chalantly whacks Hawkeye on the head from behind with a pistol handle, switches clothes, and offers himself to the natives in exchange for the captive girl.

the traditional punch to the jaw boxing knockout works really well
We had a fight club of sorts when we were teens, had a few sets of gloves and would go out in the yard and have at it. Saw quite a few knockouts. Some were LOL-worthy.

There have been a few articles on this over the years. The upshot is that any blow that renders you unconscious does so because it has caused trauma to the brain, and can quite possible have permanent negative effects, including death and other unpleasantness. The idea of a blow that sort of controllably knocks someone out so that they pop up later as good as new is a movie invention.

It's a movie device because writers like to have it. IMO, in the real world most of the cases would result in brain damage or worse.

Aren't there different types of knockouts? I thought that right around the joint of the jaw there's are nerve(s) that can, when hit, knock you out. I know I got tagged once right there and my knees just buckled.
That sort of electrical knockout seems different than the concussive kind where you get your skull pounded repeatedly.

That's what I was talking about. Not out but not able to stand up either.
My buddy got all pissed at Roger at our fight club, and started throwing haymakers. Left himself wide open, and Roger tagged him perfectly.
He rocked back and as his knees buckled, this comical quiet "oh no" passed his lips.

If you get hit in the head, pass out and do not come to within seconds; you are brain dead.

Movie blows resulting in being unconscious for hours and then coming to with just groggy feeling does not exist.
