Knoppix 3.4 can boot to either 2.6 or a 2.4.x kernel. It defaults to 2.4.x but you can opt for 2.6 when you boot up by entering a knoppix cheatcode.
As to whether or not Knoppix can successfully and safely write to an NTFS partition I can't say either, I'm a chicken. I only read from my NTFS partitions (mp3 and other media files are stored on a big NTFS partition and I don't want to corrupt the drive).
