Knoppix Linux

I downloaded an ISO of Knoppix the other day so I could start learning and play around with it a bit. I used Nero Express to burn the ISO to a disc. I burned it with the "Burn from an image" feature. The disc doesn't want to boot from my computer, though. My comp is set up to boot from the Cd-rom second, after the floppy but before the hard drive. My version of Nero is 5.5.9.2. Did I miss a checkbox that said "Make this disc bootable" somewhere before I burned? Another option, I guess, is to make a bootable data disc, and then slap the ISO in the box, but I would have thought "Burn from an image" would have done the trick. Any ideas?

You have done everything correct as far as burning from image in NERO and having your comp booting from CD before HDD. I myself am using Knoppix 3.3 burned with NERO and have no problems running it. Sorry I can't give you an answer as to why it doesn't work, But you have done everything right. Maybe there is a flaw with your ISO image. Maybe try d/l'ing it again and see if that works. Maybe one of the better Linux guys here can tune you up on how to run a checksum on the image you have.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I put the CD into my drive, and took a look at it. It gave me some instructions on how to create a boot floppy. I made it, and voila, I got my first real look at the linux desktop. I spent a few moments poking around, then went back to windows so I can learn a few more things about it. Thanks again.

Yeah, because of my lack of experience, I seem to be having problems connecting while i'm still in Knoppix. I thought I had it set up correctly, but to no avail. That is why I came back to Windows, so I can try and find out some newbie stuff. I see a few threads on here, so those are my next stop. I do have broadband too.

Every now and then, you may have to specify noapic at boot (at the lilo prompt, type "knoppix noapic") or the network card won't initialize properly. My Soyo KT400 machine requires that step, but my P4P800 machine doesn't; guess it's a bit of a crapshoot as to which machines will need that option specified.

I got it to work last night! It was pretty damn cool actually. There are a lot of programs that come with Knoppix that frankly I was shocked to find. I had a pretty good time last night messing around with it. I really need to learn more about how the Command Line Interface works, but as far as clicking around, it enjoyed myself immensely. The only bad part is that anything I set up under Knoppix (settings and such) immediately goes away when I get out of it. I know if I decide to go with an installed version on a computer this won't happen though, so I'll probably convert the old 400 mhz, 256 mb of RAM computer in my closet to a full on Linux box here in the near future. Thanks for the input everyone.

You can save your settings by using Persistent Home , and rumors on Knoppix forums have been flying around that version 3.4 is coming out on Feb 2 with kernel 2.6 .

[Edit] I mean Knoppix 3.4 coming out on Feb 9.

I used knoppix to turn my redhat home server to debian, it's great. I was surprised that the sound even works on my nForce 2 chipset (really didn't expect that with no trouble).

What is the password in Knoppix, for "root access" (changing the date/time)?
TIA

I also hear Mepis is well thought of. I've booted with it as a Live CD and it seems to find every thing ok.

I got Knoppix 3.4 booted, but there is no English boot option, however this version looks much cleaner than 3.2 and 3.3. Also kernel 2.4 and 2.6 work great.

and the key on the keyboard is not working such as the special keys and, the y and z keys are interchang with each others.

lowtech (and others)-

This 3.4 disc defaults to German. To get English, use the following boot prompt command. Note that options are in [brackets]:

knoppix[26] lang(SHIFT+0)en [ ... other options, press F2 or F3 at the prompt to see them ... ]

-SUO, currently running KNOPPIX 3.4 in English

I tried "knoppix26 lang=us" which is a no go.

Using F2 & F3 keys didn't show me the English option, but I'll try "knoppix26 lang=en" to see if it would do it.
