My pregnent wife is getting a double whammy. She's got this thing that some pregnent women get that causes severe heartburn and nausea durning pregnency (long medical term I don't remember). She also just came down with a lung infection that set off her asthma so now she has to take an inhaler. Unfortunately, use of the inhaler prevents the use of any heartburn medicine because of incompatability with antacid.

Anyone know any non-antacid heartburn medicine? I'm looking now but haven't found anything yet.

Non-antacid as in not chalky tums and such? I use pepcid or zantac, I find they both work well so I just buy whatever's cheapest. They're not acid-countering chalky stuff, but rather medicine that lowers your stomach's acid production.

I dunno, as I'm not an MD. Why don't you talk to whoever is doing the prenatal care for your wife? I'm sure they've seen this before and can suggest safe medicines to take.

I remember when my sister was pregnant she was prescribed Zantac by here doctor. Your wife should talk to her doctor and see what they recommend.

Cause it's after office hours and the doctor hasn't returned our call yet and my wife is pretty miserable right now.

She should ask her doctor or nurse. Call, you'll be surprised, they will answer questions over the phone.

As an aside, taking prenatal vitamins killed me during the first trimester of pregnancy. I had to switch over to children's chewables during that time. You might check into that. Also, saltines help, as does eating as soon as she wakes up. Never wait more than a half hour for breakfast.

Have her try nibbling saltines or graham crackers. They soak up the stomach acid and help a lot.

Prilosec, pepcid ac (not the complete) work well...but the relief is not immediate. The various other drugs, nexium (isomer of prilosec), aciphex (rabeprazole), etc work a bit better over the long haul, but none of the drugs work as well as the calcium-based tums on quick heartburn relief.

I think I'd stay far away from the heavy duty heartburn meds like tagamet and zantac and prilosec but the calcium carbonate antacids would normally be OK for pregnant women.. is that the ingredient she's supposed to stay away from?

I got this stuff called acidfree from costco that is full of friendly enzymes but also full of calcium carbonate so if that's the problem ingredient it obviously won't do but if that's OK then it might work better than an ordinary antacid.

while you're trying to get some advice for the doctor, see if you can find some tummy tea somewhere.. fennel is supposed to be good for acidy stomach and ginger is good for digestion..

edit: google delivered me some discussion among pregnant women.. some say apples are good.. one swears a&w rootbeer saved her life . and an article recommending a tablespoon of honey in a glass of warm milk. other things say make sure that milk is low-fat.

According to a 3AM informercial she should take a teaspoon of vinegar. You can also cure cancer but you have to buy the book for that.

Seriuosly most states have a prenatal care number staffed by nurses. Look for it.

How does good old regular Tums interfere with inhaler function? Just wondering, because AFAIK it's only CaCO3.

heartburn tea

that's probably not going to help you today (maybe a healthfood store? natural baby store.. something like that might have..) but you could order some for another day.

if your wife is pregnent you need to consult your OBGYN before you take ANYTHING! Even if it is over the counter.
