my friend posted her point of view about KONY 2012 on her wall. unlike most of us, she volunteered in africa for a year or so.

pretty insightful.

i really wish people would be more informed before jumping on the KONY 2012 bandwagon. Kony and the LRA are in existence because there are countless social, economic and political factors that allow him to continue his rampage. i know you all don't want to believe this, but we and our "inaction" are actually not even in the top 100 list of those contributing factors. simplifying this to the evil deeds of one man or even one army is just disrespectful. and by the way, there are countless people at the grassroots level, who i've actually met and worked with, who are working against all of those factors, not just the man. they have been working for decades to stop the violence and considering ourselves to be the only ones capable of stopping this is disrespectful to them, too.

For those that are bashing the Invisible Children charity, remember that they are primarily an advocacy group, not a direct aid group. And what other charity has managed to raise so much awareness about Kony?

So it's cool if you don't like how Invisible Children uses its money (if you look at the figures, their salary and whatnot are quite reasonable, but it is true that most of thier money does not go to direct aid http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=12429, but most of their money does go into raising awareness). But they've managed to do what not other group has been able to do, make people care about the evil that Kony is doing. So props to them for a successful awareness campaign, and I really hope it pans out into results.

And for those that think that there are more pressing issues in the world (and there are), how about you start your own advocacy group and get people aware? Or support an existing group and get them to be as successful at what they do as Invisible Children.

20 million views by my count, that's a lot more people who know about what's going on then just a week ago, and that's pretty amazing.

I actually specifically set up a spoof donation site to help funnel useless donations to Kony 2012 and into more productive measures because you donated to Kony 2012.

Except it is raising awareness to then pressure governments to take this matter seriously. If you watched the video they explained it pretty well.

Now how successful it will be I don't know, but I'm optimistic. And if they do capture/kill him as a result of measures taken by governments due to pressure for its citizens, then it will be a really cool thing. And other movements about other important issues can use this as model to actually get things done.

A few articles every now and then.

Kony is one man who is easily (in a relative sense) stoppable. It just takes someone to actually care.

Syria is a whole 'nuther can of worms involving a much bigger player with bigger weapons, and it is getting quite a bit of attention.

Of course getting governments to talk about something, and even when they try something is by no means a guarantee of success. But Kony has been running around for decades, and there is a real chance that a fairly minor increase in manpower and support could capture him, and it is certainly worth a shot.
