Koss 5-disc DVD player for $59.99 at Meijer

This looks like a great deal considering the popularity of the Apex player from CC and COMPUSA. 3-disc player from CC sells for $89. I have no idea whether this can be made region free. Model KD270, not found on www.koss-av.com. I believe the regular price is $69.99.

From the box, it states:
5-Disc DVD Video and Audio CD Player
Plays DVD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3 and Picture CDs.
Component, S-Video, Composite Video Outputs
Optical and Coaxial Digital Outputs
10 bit Video/24 Bit (96KHz) Audio DAC
Front Panel Controls
Full Fuction remote control
Upgradeable Software(for future DVD player feature upgrades)

I bought this to mainly watch VCDs downloaded from the Internet. Although it doesn't mention VCD, when I put in a VCD, the word VCD is displayed on the front control panel.

I tried quite a few of my downloaded VCD and SVCD. They all played fine except for SVCD imaged by VCDXBuild. These SVCD has the following directory structure:
EXT
EXTRA
MPEG2
SEGMENT
SVCD

In the EXTRA directory, it has two files:
DVD2SVCD.XML
SVCDINFO.TXT

I think the EXTRA directory is causing the problem. When I copied the movie AVSEQ01.MPG from the MPEG2 directory to my own local drive, then burn the SVCD using Nero. The new SVCD disc I made without the EXTRA directory played fine without any problem.

This is my first standalone DVD player, except for the DVD player from my PC, so I can't compare its picture quality with others. I am using Composite Video connection and the picture looks fine to me.

Purchased one of these today. Haven't opened it yet. Origional price said $129. 99. Could not find any reviews or anyone else selling the unit online. All input would be appreciated. Its a 5 disk changer.

Most meijers all have over 100 of these. Original price was 129.99. Meijer cost was 100, so they are losing 40 each on this - these were part of a failed sale a while back at 94.xx. The DCs (warehouses) still have a ton of them also - for meijer employees, we get 10% off so it's even better. I didn't even notice it in the ad until I saw it on a shelf with a sign.

Can anyone confirm that this unit will play svcd's? I cannot find info on this unit anywhere, including vcdhelp.



edit: oops, I guess it will play SVCD's, just not ones created with VCDXBuild. (I should learn to read ALL of the post )

Ok, I just bought one and it is going back. The first disc I put in was V4F-GONY, and no go. It had the "extra" folder that was mentioned above. I do not wish to remake all of my cd's. The second disc that I put in was TDI-LOTR:TTT, it played just fine, until I used the fast-forward feature, which caused it to lose the audio synch. I didn't bother to check if it would play and output PAL correctly.

It was a nice unit though, had a good menu structure and features. I guess that it plays DVD's, I didn't try any .

If you are looking for a DVD only solution, then you can't go wrong with this unit (for the price!).

It would be cool to have a multi-disc player that did VCD and SVCD. That way I wouldn't have to get my lazy ass off up the couch to change discs of bootlegged movies. God bless Usenet!!

Heckuvadeal.I'd be all over it if there were any in SoFla. svcd's can usually be played with no fuss by navigating to the mpg and playing it directly, like an mp3 ceptin' it's an mp2

Just for the record........

I used to work in retail sales and the Koss name is pretty low on the quality list. If you are looking for a cheap second dvd player for the bedroom or something, this will probably work. Otherwise, find a better quality unit, like a Toshiba or something. I personally wouldn't waste my time or money on this unit.

This unit just sat there for several minutes displaying "Reading". I had to power off the unit to get the disc out.

I bought this, and would like to know if it plays regular (ie rental/retail bought) DVDs well or if it has crappy sound/video quality, etc. before I give it to my parents.

I send koss-av.com an email asking if they could send me specs on it before buying it Monday but I bought it anyway and today I got a reply back saying it doesn't play svcd
but I can firmly tell one mine does!. I've tried dvd, vcd 1.0/2.0, svcd and mp3 and it all works. FF seems really slow on s/vcd, guess I'll just use chapters instead with vcdeasy
but anyway.... I'm happy with it and I've watch some high actions scenes without problems on matrix and jurassic park. A friend also bought one but he had trouble with a svcd that played in black&white but he returned it and it works fine.

information regarding this particular product. The KD270 is designed to
