Scored one this morning for $24.98!

This one is silver and I believe it is the same model as the colorful one (Hip?) we talked about couple months ago.

My dad got one this weekend. I'm heading over to a different store this evening after work. Seems like they are on clearance now. I got one a couple weeks ago ($60) for an Xmas gift to my bro in the UK. Neat little machine and great if you have different region discs. Also played VCDs without a problem, although I didn't test an SVCD before giving it away.

Is this a decent, first DVD player choice? We don't really "need" a DVD player, just waiting for the right price to come along. I know, I know, they are so cheap nowadays, but we spend our $100 on other things. Anyway, for $25 I guess I can't "really" go wrong??

similar model i guess
i am not impressed withkoss, had two sets of headphones go bad, plus a walkman
but $25 + tax for a working dvd player is about as good as it's going to get for a LONG time
i would buy one (if i thought they were still in stock)
good luck out there

For $25, it's a great player. It's actually a pretty good little system assuming it will hold up. It has composite, S-Video, and component outs as well as optical digital outs on it.

It's a cheap price to get something to play DVDs. I mainly use it for VCDs for stuff I download off the internet (TV Show episodes, movies, etc...). I also like have a little portable unit to travel with.

You do have to upgrade the firmware to make it region free. With my bro living overseas, I've gotten a couple DVDs that are region 2 (Famiily Guy Season 1 from a year and a half ago), which forces me to get a region free player.

I think you're right...for $25, you can't go wrong, unless you never rent or buy movies. I rarely buy movies, but renting DVDs is nice over renting VHS tapes.

We do rent on occassion, that's the main reason for a DVD. We don't mind renting VHS either so the purchase is not that important. What the plan was, when our CD player dies, then we replace it with a DVD.

Going to Target right now...

i bought this silver one about a week ago for like $85 on clearance at target.. used some gift cards & what-not to make it a nice deal, but i'm still really pleased with this player.

there is a rom hack for it that removes macrovision, lets you skip past the fbi warnings, and makes it region free. very slick. a link for that can be found at vcdhelp.com (there's some yahoo group you have to join to get the updated rom).

so far it's played everything i can possibly throw at it...

only complaints are this: it gets VERY hot. dont take this the wrong way, because it really isnt that bad, but when playing cd-r's every few seconds you can hear a little sound from the player that probably shouldnt be there. maybe it's just mine.

all in all it's a cool little player. it's about the size of a PSone.

I checked three targets at lunch and nobody had them. Only a couple of displays with no clearance pricing. Any confirmed sightings, esp. Detroit area??

I just called 4 stores in the SF bay area and all were out of stock.

One curious note was that 2 stores had it on clearance while the other 2 said the clearance sale was over and that it was back to the regular price of $99.

Can anyone else confirm this?

I just got back from the Maple Grove, MN store. They had one purple, and two orange flowered. I took the purple one to a scanner, and it came up at $49.98 I didn't scan the other two but all three had a price tag for $49.98 on them so I'd assume... I'm going to check out another store tomorrow I think.

If you've been reading ATHD for awhile, you know you should try to avoid calling. "Uh, no they're all gone", then hang up and go buy it for themselves.

The one I bought from my brother did the same thing. I thought it might be the media and didn't really worry about it. If you were more than 5 feet away, you couldn't really hear it. Strange. Didn't do it on store bought dvds.

Checked 4 Targets in Houston. No luck. Couple of stores had display units without accessories(adapter, remote, cables...) Probably not worth it. If I have to spend another $30+ to buy the accessories, I could just buy another brand new DVD player in the box. Also, all of the employees I talked to had a look on their faces that tells me, "...yeah, all of the store employees bought them this morning before the store opened..." HOT DEAL if you can find one!

I just bought one in the Winston Salem, NC store. It was the Orange one with flowers (yech). They still had 3 left on the shelf when I left. It showed $99 on the shelf, a price tag on it that had $69 and when I asked the guy in the dept to check the price, he told me it was $69. I said "Yeah I know, but can you scan it for me anyway?" He sighed and walked very slowly with his little scanner thing and it showed $24.98. He tried not to show is shock but I saw his eyes open up.

The flowered one and the silver one just went 50% off (49.98) in my area. Looks like an East coast thing but a heads up for us on the West coast. Although they'll probably never go 75% off around here.

Checked two stores in North Austin, didn't even see a display. Cheapest I saw was Daewoo's going for $70 but no Koss's in sight. Guess it is an east coast only thing. Too bad, I was about to return this Minitek I got from BB. Ah well.

Two different stores in Cincinnati had a few of the Orange flower models. Grabbed one, no biggie as you have 90 days to return to Target. Might sell to a cousin for what I paid for it.
