Just got mine today. They really do block out anything going on around you. They have a weird bassy echoey sound, probably just me not use to having the sound a 1/8 from my eardrum but for 10 bucks overall they are well worth it.

Slap some tape over the outside to cover up that ring of holes, and see if it sounds any better.
