Hi .. thinking of getting a 133a based board for a lan/web server that will be running debian. I know with windows you have to install 4 in 1 drivers and everything to get that chipset functioning properly .. what about under linux? Need I worry? Or should I go with an AMD 761 based board? Thanks.

my main system is an a7v133 (kt133a), and i've had no problems related to the chipset. i've compiled countless new kernels and everything has been fine.

Just make sure you have a recent kernel, they detect if there's the VIA problems and work around it. I would avoid them though, VIA makes really poor chipsets and people buying them only encourages them.

I have a 760MP right now and it rocks.

For server, making sure that right IDE drivers are compiled into kernel should be enough. Chipset fixes are nice but they existed in older kernel also (mostly). I have a couple of machines running as small linux-based servers/workstations with KT133A chipset and so far I have nothing to complain. In fact, I have had more troubles with AMD 761 hybrid chipset in my home box. Don't buy newer SiS or ALi chipset-based mobo, those haven't proper drivers for linux...

I have a FIC AZ11EA(KT133A) with and 800 Duron for my Linux box and it runs great, not a single crash. The only thing ive had to do it when I re-install is add a "no athlon" switch to either grub or lilo so it wont load the athlon module. Get a kernel panic otherwise.

NEVER had a problem, it even found my USB HP printer, Canon Scanner (USB), and MICROSOFT Optical mouse (USB). goto newegg.com they have great deals on refurb boards. Thi Iwill board rocks, and it has raid to boot. Last time I checked there they had some for $49.00

Good Luck

Id personally stick to the AMD chipsets. Ive got a 750 or whatever still chugging away and a 760mp that has been great. I dont use Linux on the machines though, but OpenBSD adds support for this stuff slower, so Linux should run just fine.

Thanks all .. I decided on an Asus A7V133 .. cause of price reasons, I don't have to buy DDR ram, I have SDRAM and I got a CPU and the board for 80 shipped, not bad. An AMD761 board would have cost me about 70 shipped, no CPU.

I don't have all the parts to make it really do anything, not that I can't get them, and I already run rc5 on my working machines =)
