KT266a and 166 fsb?

I have a shuttle ak31a 266a mobo, and i was wonderin if i will be able to run the new athlonXP cpus with 166fsb. I know the 266a chipset was not validated for 166 operation, but is it possible? Will i run into cooling issues, or is it simply akin to the days of the kt133 chipset that would never go over 115fsb no matter what? I would test it out, but i have pc2100 ddr, so any limits i reach could easily be attributed to my slower memory. Tell me what you think.

I appreciate your help,
Butch

the real question is more will your pci devices run at 41.5mhz and your agp at 81mhz...... or more likely what part of your system will bug out the higher speeds.
that's why the kt333 works better, it has a 1/5 divider. also depends on what board you have. abits kt266a offering has been reported as high at 187mhz.... blowing away the competition.

Some Kt266A boards had the right PCI divider, but I don't think any changed the AGP?

Can you point out which KT266a mobo has 1/5 PCI divider, please?

I had thought that the abit and epox boards did, could be wrong though Mind isn't what it used to be.

Maybe i am thinking of the NForce boards?

possible, but not neccesarily easy....

the 1/5 divider on the epox 8hka+ is somewhat of an urban legend. many say it does not exist, some will fight to the death to say it does? anyone have the board and have proof? It certainly is not officially reported and never is mentioned in the bios releases afaik....anyone care to prove the 1/5 divider on a kt266a????

eitherway your best bet is to buy a kt333 board. life will be easier. mb manufacturers don't want 333mhz support on kt266a, since they already have investment in kt333 boards..... so its unlikely they would jump at the at the chance to enable something that is scheduled for their next generation product...

but who knows?

Why would you need a fsb of 166 for the AthlonXP Tbred even? The chips still have a fsb of 133 x 2 and if you want to overclock you will not get it up that high unless you have some wicked cooling, and you better have some good memory too. PC2100 will not cut it, you will need PC2700 at least.

Not real hopeful here. Especially in light of the fact that the AK31a can't even run the 2200+(133 fsb) Tbred. It seems the board can't handle the 13.5x and other higher multipliers these cpu's need. I have an AK31, ver3.1, and the board won't even post with a 2200+ in it. There's a lot of discussion of this on the AMDmb.com website, under the Shuttle mb's link.

Yes, I realize that you can unlock and then drop the multiplyer down, but I'm talking about just standard fsb 166 is not needed cause even the new 2600+ doesn't use the 166fsb, it's still using the 133fsb. AMD hasn't even said that the Barton would have 166fsb for sure (although I would suspect that it will have it).
