A lot of websites seem to be of the opinion that you'd be insane not to go with an nforce2 if you're building a new athlon system. Is the kt400 still a real alternative for someone on a budget? Would it be better to get a faster processor instead of spending the extra money for an nforce2 if you don't plan on upgrading again for a long time?

i would still get an nforce2. they aren't that expensive, really. $100 for the great EPoX 8RDA+.

WEll look at it this way... the NForce2 does have better features, but its up to the company that make the boards to impliment them. I have a gigabyte G7VAXP KT400 board that ive been using for about 6 mo and its great, for the non-overclocker. It hhas firewire, USB 2.0, as well as onboard sound and lan. Now most NForce2 boards also have these features but one thing they dont have that the gigabyte board has is RAID, now befor ppl jump on me about this, they do have RAID but the only implimentations ive seen is for SATA, which i dont have. Now ABIT does have a converter but only allows one more device to be attached (toatl of 5 possible drives). Now for me I NEED a RAID controller, simply b/c i have a ton of HDD to attach, and some devices perfer to be alone on a channel.

RAID aside I think that the duel DDR is the best feature of the NForce2, along with the memory controller of course. The rest of the board is nothing special if you have a decient sound card.

In sum if you are a budget person like you said then the KT400 wont disappoint and have barton comaptibility and good performance for all apps if paired with a good CPU (ppl like to compare the two chipsets but they are both great in performance). I would just get a KT400 (Gigabyte is my fav ) with nice features and spend the extra $20 on a better procesor 1700+ to say a 2100+ if you can swing it.

$112 is more like it

but you can get a comperable KT400 with more features (raid, firewire, etc...)

I think that this guy isnt a performance freak, and a faster CPU investment might close the gap in performance, as well as having more features as i mentioned above...

I'm not really interested in extra features like raid, s-ata, firewire, etc, just price/preformance. Also i live in Canada and there seems to be a bigger difference in price between the kt400 and nforce2. Is nforce2 better for overclocking?

I donno but overclocking deals with alot of variables, so to say a motherboard is "good" at overclocking is a misnomer. You need to know what manufacturer made the board, what kind of bios they are using, what kind of monitoring and features to aid in OC, finally what kind of memory you have as well as the cooling in your computer as well as many other things that i failed to mention...

In short it all depends on the manufacturer's implemintation of the chipset. In other words an nforce2 board can be bad at OC if the manufacturer is not aiming at that particular market.

mwave is one of the best, and longest running resellers. they have an 8.4 on resellerratings, and the only reason that it is that low is because they take a while to process RMA's. on the anandtech vendor ratings, mwave has a 95.12%. seems like a high rating to me.

[btw, where do you pay extra for pieces of brain? i can see paying extra for peace of mind, but not for pieces of mind ]

Depends on your processor and memory, methinks. If you have a fast processor, probably with a 333mhz bus, and you can use faster memory, go with the Nforce. But since the newest VIA Hyperion drivers, I think that there is not enough difference for lower specced systems. I know I love my motherboard very much . My rig gets a pretty darn good 3500 3dmarks in 03 - no nforce2 involved!

8rda+, xp2100, twinmos/winbond pc3200 256mb x2

200FSB x 11.5 =2.3ghz . mem 5-2-2-2=ROCK SOLID STABLE with prime 95 and playing games at same time.
Over 14k on 3dmk2001se with a ti4200.
only thing extra I did was add some AS3 to the NB heatsink, THATS IT!

For slightly under $350 for the entire upgrade, I couldnt be happier. (mobo from mwave btw)
What would I change if I had to do it all over again? NOT A DAMN THING!!!!!

good post mboy,

i just got my 8rda+ from mwave also, running since yesterday and i am loving it already. i didnt have too much time to tweak it yet, but the highest fsb i got it running so far is 177. there are so many different settings on this board, yet all the features are so simple to adjust. one thing i have a gripe about is the placement of the ide controller connectors. i had to go out and find a longer cable due to my larger case. and yeah, not have raid kinda sucks. i usually run more then 4 drives and now i have to ditch them or get a raid controller card.

The most common is, what's wrong with the KT400... nothing, really.. it's just that, when you can get a mobo such as an 8RDA+ with the NForce2 chipset on it, that bests the KT400 in almost every single way (in all ways that actually matter) there is no point in buying a KT400 board. (IMO) ...That is the reason NForce2 rocks.. there isn't any competition really right now for it... it's just the best.. plain and simple....

NForce2
Epox 8RDA+ $185
Asus A7N8X - $179
Soltek - $158 ($139 in the specials last week)

Via
Asus A7V8X - $149
Gigabyte - GA-7VA - $123

I think if you can grab that soltek board for $139 thats a steal.
All prices are CA best prices from Ncix or Anitec (NCIX prices matches)

If you are a super huge budget then i guess you dont have a choice...but I think NForce2 is worth it
- better drivers
- better sound
- faster
- DC Memory
- PCI & AGP lock
- Unlocks TBred multipliers

Those prices are really high. Am I missing something?? You can go most anywhere and get them cheaper.

I just went through the same thing and I decided to go with the KT400 chipsetfor several reasons. One is they unlock the 2400s where the N-Force chips don't. I called 2 motherboard companys and they both said to go with the KT400 as the N-Force had too many problems. I know many are running the N-Force boards without issues but go to any forums about motherboards and all you read is problems with the N-Force chipset and it is from all motherboards not just one brand. I just ordered a Asus A7V8X yesterday and I want all of those features like USB2.0, Firewire, Lan, Serial ATA for 119 shipped.

wow you sure you got the "full featured" board? I think they were running around $140 not 119....

Wow i thought it was the other way around?
KT400s unlock the Tbreds? and the Nforce2 doesnt?

Around the Lower Mainland - Greater Vancouver area it would seem that there is a disproportionate price difference between the Epox and the Asus nforce2 boards. It seems that the Epox offerings are cheaper in the States compared to the Asus offerings. Here, they are closer together with regards to price. This makes the choice between the Epox and Asus more difficult. Since the Epox doesn't enjoy such a price advantage then i'd be more inclined to give the Asus Deluxe a shot.

Yes it is the full featured board for 119 at Newegg and Googelgear. I kind of want to go NF2 but after talking to 2 motherboard companies tech support and they said go with the KT400 chipset so that is what I did. I also wanted to unlock the lower multipliers on my 2400 without modifying it which you can do with the KT400 chipset.
