Well at least it gives the consumers more options ... SiS748 for the budget non-o/c'er, nForce2 for those who want the 'best' and the KT600 which slips inbetween (though IMHO PCI/AGP locking isn't significant). UK shows prices are SIS=£45, VIA=£54 NV=£62. I suppose single channel DDR takes some of the headache and cost out of purchasing your RAM

newegg just got in a bunch of kt600 based boards (just type "kt600" in the search window)

among them is the epox and soltek boards

the soltek board uses via's own audio codec... so it will really be able to shine with via's new via vinyl built in the new southbridge

Hmm... interesting.

One of the first things I noticed is... that save those derivated from former chipset designs (GA-7VT600 1394, A7V600), are rather... slim, which is a nice feature I guess...

However, it kinda makes you wonder... if that southbridge is so feature filled, why don't companies take advantage of it and equip it all in their boards? Costs for phy layers should not be above a dollar or two per feature.

I think I'll give a shot at Gigabyte's GA-7VT600-L which I currently have in my office's warehouse. Can't possibly hurt, can it?

most of the boards that dont use the built in sata are just the kt400/a board with the new chips (since the kt600 chipset is pin compatable with the kt400a)

which is why gigabyte was able to get the GA-7VT600-L to market so quick... but the GA-7VT600 1394 is a totally new board design/layout

but your right... it doenst make much sense to leave off the sata, since the extra cost of manufacture should be very very little (but the cost of designing a new board would be the only reason i could imagine to not implement it)

See? What I tell you?

Lazy, them.

and 1313, yes, if overclocking is your concern, you will get further with nForce II thanks to those features.

Those lazy engineers.
Sheesh!

I think that is why everyone who bought a Gigabyte GA-7VRXP was so frustrated with Gigabyte it was pretty much an older KT266 design...and Gigabyte really didn't update enough for the better KT333 chipset. I learned to hate Gigabyte, and to become a bit skeptical of VIA chipsets, because that board was so frustrating!

Ironically I just built a PC for a friend in need with a cast off Iwill KK266 MB....and that board is very stable!

1313: VIA chipsets/motherboards arent that bad... they are just... well... speciall.

Some would even dare to say its for non-enthusiasts. I would have to agree...

However, not all of us are enthusiasts, and there are people who have had some good experience with VIA chipsets, or simply already know how to deal with them and get an almost-perfect-entry-level-system.

Also, Gigabyte has a VERY high reputation of producing high quality products. Even if lazy work on the outside, I am most certain they have fixed many of the bugs that plauged initialy the KTXXX chipsets... including that horrible high-latency PCI bug... and that board design basicly covers all aspects of a highly integrated motherboard. If you look closely, there are many screened areas, including those for connecting card readers, which I have not seen at all in other brand's mobos. the GA-7VXXXX series is has a gigantic PCB to house all these features, which can be equiped with any option that exists up to date.

Well said Anslead. So Noforce 2 is faster than KT600 by a couple benchies. Big deal. I've had solid, stable systems out of Via for years. There is a good chunk of people who O/C modestly. And for them, VIA has always presented a viable option.

We're not going to see Via go away so easily. I do give Nvidia credit however; they know how to stay ahead, and crush competition. They're getting rusty though...
