I'm having trouble install service pack 1a on my Windows Xp Pro machine. First I run the network executable and it runs for abit all fine and I ask it to archive my files so I can uninstall it later then I get an error saying " The file c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys is open or in use by another application. Close all other applications and then try agian. Question is, shouldn't be in use anyways because its for my drives?? This is the first time I have ever encountered this error, please help!

I suggest installing SP2 instead, as that is the current servicepack.

Try typing "endlocal atapi.sys" and attempting the install again.

Try uninstalling any Alcohol 120% / Nero / InCD / DirectCD / and similar CDROM-type applications, and try again.

Try googling - I found the "endlocal" bit in 30 seconds with Google.

No. What problems have you had?

I typed it in CMD but it didn't work.

1. What did it do?
2. What happened when you uninstalled all CDROM-hack applications and tried again?

Your cluelessness is getting annoying. Also, learn to search, the atapi.sys issue has been covered in a dozen threads already.

Nuttin, still the same.

sorry bsobel but maybe I'm not very good at searching, every time I search for something I never turn up with anything. And BTW I am not clueless because my friend installed SP2 and it fuc.ked up his machine, you really think I would like to do the same? You'd likely would but I wouldn't I'm very cautious when making huge system changes.

Some people have had trouble installing SP2 on an existing XP install. This is almost always due to:

1. Spyware installed on their PC prior to installation
2. Bad drivers installed on their PC prior to installation
3. A handful of incompatible programs installed on their PC (DivX comes to mind, perhaps VirtualCD?)

Still, I haven't heard of any "bad SP2 installation" that couldn't be recovered from. Like any major system change (even installing SP1 had problems back in the day), you should backup essential files, ensure that you have a restore point in System Restore, and research the incompatible software issues that people are having so you can be prepared. Worse case scenario, you have to uninstall SP2.

Uninstall any Virtual CD like Daemon or Alcohol program and reboot then install the service pack.

Yea I thought I had not installed alcohol 120% but it turns out the original partion had it (Meaning I just installed XP over an old installation. I only need XP temporarily, I will eventually just do a clean install with everything wiped off eventually. Thanks for the help. Here are some links to Service Pack 1a:http://www.microsoft.com/windo...dates/sp1/default.mspx
Better download it and keep it before they remove it completely! I had the install on a CD and the express install still works apparently. Does MS still have downloads for Service pack 1,2,3 for Windows 2000? Seems like MS doesn't support old service packs.
