I paid 400 big ones for my Parhelia. It has sat in its box now since its launch. It seemed like time to get it out and fire it up hoping I might see a new spin on card. Went to the Matrox site and grabbed the new drivers thinking I would simply have no issues getting rolling. Well after a couple of hours of trying to simply get the control panel to work so I could alter the card settings, I am still dicking around with Microsoft's .Net frame work now. Good work Matrox. It is a damn shame when I have to go to Microsoft to make my $400 VidCard work. If you spend the bucks on this card now with ATi's 9700 Pro so close to a retail reality, you should have your ass kicked. Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...but I seriously friggin' doubt it.

while nearly all of the big sites got their card free stright from matrox for the launch, kyle didnt get one

Does Matrox's drivers require the .Net framework to be installed or something?

If that's the case, I'd be pissed too, I want drivers, not a boatload of crap from MS.

YES, they DO! From Anand:

Matrox supplied us with the final drivers that will be shipping with the Parhelia by the end of this week as well as the latest build that will be available on their website by then (v225 which is what we tested with). The UI front end for their drivers are written using a .NET codebase and thus require the installation of Microsoft's .NET Framework under Windows XP in order for the configuration utility to actually work. Currently that means that you have to run Windows Update and download the appropriate update before installing the drivers. This process is supposed to be automated in the driver install but it definitely does not work at this point.

I'm normally a supporter of Kyle and HardOCP, but I have to say, i think his "Parhelia Soapbox" comments on the front page undermine the integrity of the site. If he's not happy about something he could at least have the professional courtesy to slam it in a professional way - leave the half cursing and flagrant personal bias out of the articles, for the love of god.

Uhm, I hate to break it to you-- but unless you plan to switch to a different type of OS in the near future, Microsoft WILL ensure that you install .net.
.net it's Microsoft new baby, they're going to make sure anyone with a windows box has it installed. The parhelia is just the beginning.

Whaaaaa Cry me a river. At least he does get free hardware. So one company decided not to send him and card and then he had trouble installing drivers because he had to run MS update (which must be rocket science). WTFs the big deal..... It was his choice to spend $400 on the card after other reviews were out. Don't complain about shooting yerself in the foot dude

He did the same when nVidia backed out of sending him a half dozen GF3's after it's initial launch.

Well, for one thing, Im running Linux and use it for everything but gaming.

And when Im gaming, I use Win2K, and so far I've yet to encounter a game that requires the .net framework.

I installed the above mentioned framwork once when I tried out some beta MS software, and it sure was one big boatload of crap, and definately not something I'd wanna install just to make my friggin video card work.

HardOCP has been presenting their articles in this "unprofessional" style since day 1. I do not have a problem with that as long as they are reporting the truth. IMHO it's more fun to read.
