I'm wanting to replace my 64mb Kyro2 card. It is actually quite a good card (regardless of what you may read) so I'm only gonna upgrade it if I can find a suitable and non-expensive replacement. My main Q for you guys is, would a GF4MX be much better than the kyro2?

I cant afford any more than about $250AUD. Which doesnt really buy much.

It will be running in an AthlonXP 1800+ system with 256mb DDR Ram.

Let me know what you think...

With existing games, I don't think it'll be that much of an improvement over what you're using now. The GF4MX (not the 420) is roughly the speed of a GF2u. Your only advantage would be the inclusion of the TnL engine for some of the games. I'd save a little more and see if I can get a GF3 ti200 instead.

I have a similiar system to yours (Kyro II, 1600+@1.54 Ghz, 256 megs DDR) and decided to upgrade the video card a little while ago... ATI has really gotten back into the 3D gaming business with improved drivers, so I decided to take a chance on the Radeon 8500 LE w/ 128 megs DDR. I picked it up on OEM for $209 CDN, popped it into the machine, and watched my 3DMark 2001SE scores go from approximately 3200 with the Kyro II to just over 8000 with the new card. I've played several games (Dungeon Seige, UT, TO:AOT, CS, JK2, FF) with absolutely no problems: no crashes, no strange texturing/rendering problems, and so on. This is a great card!

For what it does, I strongly recommend it over the GF3 series... in fact, if you bought retail and overclocked that, 3DMark scores in the 9000 range isn't an impossibility, and that's GF4 territory at a very good price.

If your not a heavy gamer than the GF4MX will do you well but if you like playing games at high resolutions with high quality then you should consider something more powerful like the radeon 8500le or the gf4 ti4200.

Not much better, but it would be a great step up from the Kyro II, especially considering that it has T&L, an aspect that can make the Kyro II suffer, and you will be able to notice a helpful difference in both the FPS rate and graphics quality. Basically, go by what nemesismk2 said.

My Kyro II is still going strong, but, of course, my best (graphics wise) game is Serious Sam 2 (soooo fun).

You can pick up a GF3 Ti200 for just over $250 dollars (Australian). Might be the way to go....

The good old Radeon 8500 can be had for $285 in good old australia.. this would definitely keep you cracking for a while for a couple of bucks more.

DaLeroy and JeremiahTheGreat,

Where can i get these cards at these prices?

And which would be better for my games, the Radeon 8500LE or the GF3 ti200?

The games I play are mainly Operation Flashpoint, CS (a little, plz dont slap me), and GTA3 now. First person games are my faves.

Thanks to all for the input.

Radeon 8500 > GF3 Ti200 ... it's faster than even the GF3 Ti500 in most benchmarks.

Since I'm in the same situation I thought I'd toss my in my .02. You might want to consider keeping the Kyro for a while, as you know it runs all current games just fine. The next gen such as Doom III will need an upgrade but by I'm hoping the GF4 Ti4200 will be cheap. Might work for you too?

IMO getting a GF3 ti200 would be a bad move, I've used one and it's performance was poor. Even though I don't have 100% faith (they are getting alot better though) in ATI's ability to make good drivers the actual product is superior to the GF3 Ti200 and I think it's also more future proof.

I do not know what the cost in AUD is but I would definitely go with the Radeon 8500 over the GeForce 4 MX any day because all a GF4 MX is is a highly clocked GF2 with a dual RAMDAC.

I just found a place that sells Gainward GF4 ti4200 64mb cards for $319 AUD!
They also sell GF3ti200 64mb cards for $239.

My question now is, if i can get a Radeon 8500LE for $285, would I be better to go with the Gainward GF4, or the Radeon?

Also, if JeramiahTheGreat reads this, where did you get the price for the Radeon from?
