Here're my system specs:

2.53 Ghz Pentium 4 w/ 533 fsb
Asus P4PE w/ gigabit lan and IEEE 1394 w/ 1002 BIOS
1 x 512 MB Corsair CL2 PC3200 @ 2700
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro w/ Catalyst 3.0 drivers
Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum
48x16x48 Benq CDRW
16x Liteon LTD-166S Dvd-Rom Drive
2 x Western Digital 75 gig 7200 RPM Drives with 2mb buffer

Pretty good system setup, right? Well, here's the thing: my benchmarking and real-life applications dont work as well as they should. I only get 14,000 marks on 3dMark2001 SE, 5980 CPU marks, 6300 Memory marks, and 980 HDD marks in PCMark2002, and for those who say that only real-life performance matters, I only get 240 fps in Quake 3, but the real kicker is that i'm averaging 30 fps in Counter-strike on 1024x768. Also, the comp's overall performance is noticeably laggy. Anyone have any sort of a clue as to why my comp is messed up and what to do about it?

whoa... thats scary, because I'm about to get the same thing tomorrow, except an AIW 9700 pro.

as for explanation to the problem, not sure, did you install those Intel INF/chipset drivers?
windows update?

I think CS limits itself. When not ingame, it runs at 30fps, and when I'm playing the FPS is always 60 regardless of where i am/what I am looking at.

Your HDD score looks alright (Thogh i'm not too familar with pcmark2002)
Though why is your ram at 333mhz? Why don't you leave it at 400mhz?

Gonecop:

The AIW is exactly the same as the 9700pro save for all those nifty features that makes its a AIW

did you load the intel inf driver and intel accelerator driver?

are you using directx 9 or 8.1?

pio or dma mode?

have you tried different drivers as some report that older drivers work better for them

was it a clean install or did ytou upgrade the video/and did you remove all traces of old drivers if this is the case?

as you can see there are many possibilities

also i have a 2.8 and only get 15770 in 3d mark 2001 so your scores are not bad at all

There are known issues with newer Radeon's and CS, but I can't think of them off of the top of my head nor do I know where to look.

However, I DO know that the 60 FPS ingame is due to vSync, which can be toggled in the advanced OpenGL settings in windows. If you turn off vsync, you get a steady 100 max, because CS CANNOT, I repeat, CANNOT, have ANY FPS reading over 100.0

The thing is, if you turn off vsync, you don't get the benefits of a higher framerate such as smoother gameplay and the crosshair does not return to normal position as smoothly (if you even play with dynamiccrosshair at all), so I just leave vSync on.

I don't know much, but I know about CS

maybe you should try some console commands in your CS game to fix that 30 fps prob

Just dug up that console command

ati_npatch 1

Either that or ati_npatch 0 , one of which disables Truform which messes with the HL engine

cl_fpsmax 100 will raise the maximum fps to 100 in cs, the 60 fps is when runnign under opengl with win2k/xp. I didn't think it affected ATI cards, just nvidia, but windows sets the refresh rate to 60hz, so with vsync on it will stay like that. Don't disable vsync unless you just want to benchmark. You may get image tearing and allkinds of neat artifacts.

I thought cl_fpsmax 100 was default?
And I also thought it was fps_max 100 ?

Maybe I don't know as much as I thought

But I agree, don't turn off vsync

Recover is right, however I only think this applies to the previous version's of half-life. Bottom line is his system should be faster, do you have alot of backround apps running or any spyware? Whats your os?

Oops... hehe its been a while, it is fps_max for the command. Default is 72fps, even when you use the latest patches (unless retail cs is different than the mod one). cl_showfps 1 will give you a fps monitor in the lower right hand corner of the screen. That way you can determine in game fps. There is an ATI fix out there somewhere, but I didn';t know you needed it for ALL ATI cards. I just remember people having problems with the 8500.

72fps? I'm getting a steady 60fps with a geforce2

I don't think its limited to him

My brother can't get about 30FPS with his radeon9000 pro on a 1900+

It doesn't bother him though since it doesn't ever drop

You've probably got vsync on then, as was mentioned earlier. Your brother likely has the Truform enabled. The fix for that is also in previous posts.

He'll love 100fps once he sees it. I can tell when I drop below liquidy smooth framerates, at around maybe 60fps. 30fps just looks bad now.

Well, the reason i'm ticked about quake III with 240 fps is that i should be getting around 320. However, all these results lead me to believe there is something wrong with my comp, and I want to find out what. I do have the chipset drivers and the app accelerator installed, btw. Thx for your contributions. Also, I have XP pro and direct x 9 installed.
