For those people who are thinking of purchasing the Athlon XP2600+ (Barton) & K7VTA3 combo for $89.99, I personally would recommend that you wait 'til Fry's runs the Athlon XP2000+ (Thorton) & K7VTA3 combo for $49.99 again. At least with my board, I was able to simply bump up the FSB to 166Mhz and it boots up as an XP2600+. I've been running Windows XP and it has been working flawlessly. I pretty much have it running 24/7 as a server, and I'm very happy with it thus far. Not sure if there is a huge performance difference between this and the Barton core, but for $40 buck less, I'm a happy camper.

The same deal's running in Vegas (again) at the same price. I don't know if the others are also available...that's just what I noticed when I was over there at lunchtime.

Isn't the real 2600+ running at 266Mhz FSB?

I took the 2400+ and ECS combo and used PC3200 with the FSB at 180 (i think) and it runs at XP3200+ speeds. That deal was only $65, so that wouldn't be a bad direction to go if the ECS & 2000 combo doesn't come up first.

I would agree. I think the only people buying those right now are the bleeding-edge people that "gotta have it now." I like these people, cuz they eventually cause the price come down to something realistic after a while!

How is it that people actually buying the drives cause the price to come down. If no one would buy them wouldn't the prices come down more quickly? Basic supply and demand if you ask me.

When companies produce products and nobody buys them, they are more likely to just quit producing the product.

There has to be enough interest at the higher prices that early product development costs justify, for a company to even want to stay in the market. Lowered prices for consumers can come from lowered costs from increased component buying volume, improved production output, eliminating product assembly complexity, finding a cheaper labor force, etc. that successful products warrant after some time, or they can come from drastic reductions in price on existing product, which usually means eventual end of that product. Companies don't keep producing products that consumers don't buy.

Supply and demand is only an issue on products when there is already a market for them, and competitors fighting for that market share.

Most of the same prices listed above are available in Phoenix as well. It will be a tough withdrawal in 4 weeks - no more Fry's (good for my wallet).

SATA will be priced more reasonably - 2 years from now, you'll wonder what that big fat PATA cable is,
