I just jettisoned the pathetic San Diego Union-Tribune, who just laid off the few decent writers they had left after major layoffs each of the last 3 years. The Times has its issues, but it is still night and day better than the UT, and this deal is way cheap. The UT is $6/month for Thursday through Sunday, but the Times is $1 a week for 7 days a week if you sign up for a year ($52).

The exact same deal is at mylocalpaper.com, and they appear to be the same company. www.discountnewspapers.com had a good BBB rating and they both are listed as secure by mcafeesecure.com.

I haven't used either of them before. Has anybody had experience with them?

I just subscribe to Orange County Register Thursday-Sunday for $20 a year and 7 days a week is $26 a year. Don't know if the deal is still good though.

OH - YEAH !!! I want that deal !

How ? Where ?

I don't want to crap on this thread too much, but as an L.A. native, I have to say that the L.A. Times is a weak shell of the once great newspaper it was.

They've gutted their staff, and the actual news and editorial content are now to the point where I can get more real news and good opinions faster listening to NPR and the network morning shows, and I can read Doonsbury online. Hell! They've cut the Sunday editorial page, and they don't even have a decent TV log.

Sadly, it's no longer worth $1 a week, unless you don't have a cheaper source for a bird cage liner. All you get is more recyclable trash.

I'll second Harvey. I'm also an LA native and I wouldn't even bother with the Times. I guess the Sunday coupons could get you your $1 back, so it might be worth it in that sense. As far as news, however, no thanks. It used to be great, probably top 5 in the US, but sadly has fallen precipitously from that perch.

The really sad thing is that the LA Times is probably STILL a top 5 paper in the US. It may suck relative to what it used to be, but so does just about every other US paper. I still like getting a paper, and, unfortunately, the LA Times is about as good a paper as you can find these days after the WSJ, NYT and Washington Post. I don't know what is happening around the world, but in the US the printed paper is dying fast.

How is the OCR? Do you currently like it better than the LAT? The San Diego UT prints about 2-1/2 pages of local news a day now. It is just pathetic. The UT just shut down its Washington DC Bureau (as many papers have been doing), so now we are reliving the old stories about how the DC Bureau reporters for the San Diego UT all worked for the CIA for decades. What a proud journalistic tradition we have here in SD!

The reason why LA Times can afford this deal is because they don't make money off the subscriptions. They make their money from AD sales. In order to make it more attractive for potential advertisers to sign on, they need to be able to say that they have X number of people reading their paper. The more in circulation, the more attractive to advertisers. Once the promo period is over, they call you constantly to try to get you to sign on permanently. This practice left a bad taste in my mouth, I will never subcribe with them again.

I like the Orange County Register , mainly for its

*libertarian* Opinion Section/Editors/Editorials .

The LA Times was caught with its pants down when it tried to do

a " hit piece " just days before CA elected the GOVERNATOR-SCHWARTZENATOR .

Then it was sold and lots of heads rolled . Now they are cutting costs

till the losses stop ...

< bought a copy Sunday LA Times for $5.75 in Princeville, Kauai last Nov. >

>>> Just got a snailmail offer from the LA Times :

> $39-year home delivery SUNDAY-ONLY ,

> PLUS a $20 MACY'S Gift Card .

...So , $19/year for Sunday's LA Times

< don't tell the Audubon-Society but I might bite on this offer >

Its a pity that LA Times is doing so bad. I cancelled my subscription when they began to turn blatantly left. And I'm not just talking about the editorials.
Unless I see some quality, news.google.com will be my paper of choice and craigslist will be my choice of classifieds...

Update : LA Times sent offer , $40/yr , Thurs-Sun ,

+ $20 giftcard to In-&-Out . I sent check , NOT CC

so that they couldn't sneak a high-priced renewal .

Then called the OC Register to cancell , but they asked

why , then they offered same terms to renew ( $20/yr , Thurs-Sun )

ACK ! I couldn't say NO !

Now I get 2 papers & $20 hamburgers ...

With the LA times, one usage of the published drug coupons (Rite-Aid, Target, Walgreens) already has paid off the $26/yr (Thu-Sun). It may be beneficial for some folks to get a subscription.

Hey it may be paper, but I still appreciate in depth and comprehensive news coverage. Plus the Fry's ads and Sunday tech ads are good for deals.

Garbage newspaper, move on........

WSJ is worth every penny IMO. Read it for a few years and you'll have the equivalent of a graduate degree.
