I would imagine that once you have the drive up, you can format it to whatever file system you want.

NAS are a different animal than your normal usb/firewire external drives. you need to format in the web interface and some of them don't allow for NTFS, etc.

Checking LaCie's site doesn't shine any light on the answer other than the fact that the mini does NTFS and the BigDisk is supposedly the bigger version of this. I pulled the trigger on this and will have it in-hand tomorrow and can check then and post back unless others have already done so

Currently DVD images and other media are kept on my rig in my sig below but I wanted something to offload everything to. If the LaCie won't allow NTFS, I'll be using it as media storage serving content throughout the house. I, like you, wanted to store DVD images but will be satisfied if it won't. If I can just get the mp3's, TV shows/cartoons and divx on the LaCie that will suffice for now. I'm currently storing around 50 images along with the other media but could store 200 or so if the LaCie will just hold the other media.

Thanks

My tracking information shows a delivery of Wednesday but I'll create a rar tonight of a few .iso's and make a 10gb file and transfer that one and let you know when I get it in.

Received mine yesterday and got it up and running in 15 minutes. Currently transferring 450GB of media to it. Its taking quite a while from what I expected via 100MB ethernet.

It will take 10 Hours 44 Minutes 14.71 Seconds assuming optimal transfers to get 450GB of data onto the HD.

1000MB would be 1 Hours 4 Minutes 25.47 Seconds. A bit faster.

Interesting...

Keep in mind that the file system format cannot be changed.

I see two drives in that screenshot, one showing xfs and the other showing EXT3?

The drive doesn't allow for NTFS formatting. What I did was format with EXT3 filesystem and am installing a driver on my XP boxes called Ext2 Installable File System For Windows. This allows me to map the BigDisk as a network drive to my Windoze boxes. Seems this is the only option since NTFS isn't...

As far as xfer rates go...it took a little over 2 hours to transfer 800+ gigs via 1000mb network. Not bad.

Hi guys, don't mean to steal the thread, but since you guys were mentioning RAID and such, I thought I mention this drive I'm looking at: Western Digital My Book Pro II WDG2TP10000N 1TB 7200 RPM USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394a / 1394b External Hard Drive - Retail

It costs a lot more (around $100), but it has RAID capabilities, a 3-year warranty (not bad), and the ability to manually swap out the drives! It comes with "EMC Retrospect Express" backup software, don't know if thats good though.
FYI, the drives have 16 MB buffers in the 1 TB edition, and I found this on their support site:

"The My Book Premium II and My Book Pro II hard drives are pre-configured for RAID 0 (Striped) mode for maximum capacity and accelerated performance. These products also supports RAID 1 (Mirrored) mode for data protection which dedicates half the capacity to mirror the data in both internal hard drives. These products DO NOT support JBOD or any other RAID configurations."

"The My Book Pro Edition II hard drive ships with a HPS+ (Journaled) format. This Macintosh native format is not compatible with Windows based computers therefore the drive will need to be repartitioned and reformatted before usage in a Windows based computer."

On that note, the My Book Premium II comes with NTFS, but only has a 1 year warranty. I think the software is different too (probably because of the file format).

OK I'm done!

Were you able to transfer that 10 gig file?
