Ladies, thinking about getting an abortion? Live in Texas?

Texas wants to pay women 500 bucks if they change their mind about getting an abortion, hoping they'll have the kid and just give it up for adoption instead.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/23/texas.abortion.reut/index.html

This is ridiculous. Who's going to think to themselves "Hmm, well, I really don't want to have a kid, but I DO really want a new Prada bag...." Texas is the most effed up place on the planet, I swear

Think about how stupid the average person is, and then realize that 50% of the world is stupider than that. I see this program enjoying moderate success.

A for effort, but putting a child up for adoption isn't cheap. Apparently a human life is worth 500 dollars, I think they should offer something more substantial. Discounts on life insurance or education costs, something along those lines.

Does $500 even cover the birthing costs?

Only if you use the "hot towels - bite down on the stick" birth method.

I look at it as a few months worth of free diapers for moms who don't want to abort. Just go to an abortion clinic... sign the paperwork and collect your $500 when the kid is born. $500 for diapers and formula! Yay!

Cool, Texas will likely eat the cost of 10k per kid born in the hospitals that many of these moms wont/cant pay.

Serves Texas right for sending us Bush.

Texans, get your wallets out.

His proposal calls for giving any woman going to an abortion clinic the $500 option, to be paid no more than 30 days after the baby is born and given up for adoption.

Notice the and
So not only do they have to give birth to the child, but they also have to give them up for adoption?

$500 is ridiculous. How do you put a price on a person? This is wrong in so many levels.

Didn't read the whole article but this does sound ultra-retarded.

Edit: This also has a very Third World feel to it. I think they used to offer 10 kilos of rice a month (for an year or two) in some villages here so that poor mass-baby-producing-idiots didn't abandon their babies.

Yeah, I'm betting a lot of new moms will be cashing in on that. Good for them.

There's no freakin' way 500 bucks would influence what choice I made, and I really doubt it's going to change any other women's minds. It's really kind of insulting, and it doesn't seem particularly "family values" oriented to bribe people who don't want kids to have them anyway. Even if this were something completely trivial or there were women that moneygrubbing, it's still cheaper in the long run to have an abortion than take the $500.

This reminds me, I need to put up my new bumpersticker- "If you can't trust me with a choice, how can you trust me with a child?"

Edit: Ok, I obviously didn't read the article before posting. Still doesn't seem very "pro-life" to me to slap a $500 price tag on a fetus and it insults the decisionmaking skills of the people who are gonna have to deal with carrying it and the health risks. (Death rate for having legal abortions is much lower than death rate for giving birth. And, it's still cheaper to have an abortion than to give birth and get $500, unless you're doing it at home in your bathtub with no professional assistance.)

I find this incredibly short-sighted. Hopefully, someone studies this and publishes the results in a few years:

Attention inner-city crack-head single mothers: get your teenaged daughter knocked up, collect $500 for more crack.

Attention crackheads: get pregnant, collect $500. Don't worry about the crack-baby you have; you can give it to the state.

Sorry - I'm pretty certain that it's going to have the appeal of easy money to a lot of low-income people who are already on public assistance.

edit: I removed: "Attention all pregnant Texas females: Go to the abortion clinic, say, "I'm thinking about getting an abortion." Collect $500."
because they have to give the child up for adoption.

don't blame all of texas for dan patrick. he's a freshman senator and no one else in the legislature likes him.

i'm friends with his son. i'll be sure to forward this thread to him.

or, this could be a clever plan to show the hypocrisy that if we're abhorrent of outright paying women to have babies, but we do it all the time with the way the welfare system is set up.

No I think republicans do as well.

Think of all the money the state will get to spend on idiots that think... well if I get knocked up and give the kid up thats a "easy" $500. Then all these kids go to state care after no one adopts them. Long run people that live in Texas pay a lot more in taxs for this republicans idiotic idea.

Doesn't France pay people to have babies too? I remember reading an article about them not having the declining birth rate most developed countries do because of it or something.

so, you're opposed to the fact that welfare pays (poor) women to have (fatherless) babies?

What do you mean? I don't think this is going to have any effect on most mothers; the only ones who will be enticed by this are the ones who would also be enticed to become pregnant for the easy $500.

Well, chances are she got pregnant "accidentally." So she's already got a leg up on looking stupid.

No pun intended.

Do you have any proof of that? As far as I know, it's free. In fact, "safe haven" laws in many places let a mother give her baby away for free to an authorized organization (hospital ERs, fire stations, etc.) and she gains protection from prosecution for doing so.
