*have fast cable '22Down/4Up' speeds
*fairly fast computer
*have turned off most background running services/progs(using Black Viper site as a guideline, and 'msconfig' and 'services.msc') & use 'GameBooster' utility as well
*good ping to the game server @ 50-60
*when I get the lag, if I disconnect router/modem / re-connect /often lag is gone, but not always...

Someone told me this today...what do you think...? >

"If you have a smart modem and a router, both have "nat"
(network address translation) and will fight each other for
supremacy. Turn off nat on modem or change router ip to
192.168.2.1 instead of default. Some of these new smart modems
are pretty smart, but the engineers were not as they reserved
192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1 for the modem. These are also
reserved for the routers.....I see conflicts here."

True? And worth trying?

By smart modem they mean a gateway such as what you get with AT&T on the 2wire brand.

A gateway will be incompatible in a way with a router because they both attempt to do DHCP.

At home I have a Siemens SpeedStream hooked into a linksys wrt54g running tomato. I use to run a 2wire with routing/dhcp turned off. The lag you could be seeing could be due to your DHCP lease expiring and both of your devices fighting over where to obtain a new lease.

I think in saying "NAT" they meant DHCP. They are only similar, DHCP explains the auto-assignment of IP Addresses while NAT explains the use of private IP addresses on a private LAN and the use of the public IP assigned to your modem. NAT explains why from any computer in your house, a visit to www.ipchicken.com shows the same IP even though each computer internally would have a 192.168.x.x address (this could change on advanced users who configure the use of private class a or b).

Also: 192.168.1.1 on my LAN is my Linksys router running tomato and 192.168.0.1 is my speedstream modem. The linksys handles all routing/dhcp and spits out ip's in the range of 192.168.1.5 to 192.168.1.50
