Just recently got Asus V770 deluxe, a GF2 GTS 32 DDR card. Installed it and works great. The problem is when I play UT online, I get this strange lag every 2mins or so. The ?lag? lasted for about 1-5 seconds! My screen will freeze and it?ll see the disconnect icon during game play. I didn?t have this problem with my V3-3000 video card playing at 800x600. I think I did noticed was this lag occurs less frequent when I play UT in 800X600, however, very frequent when playing under 1280 X 768. Can someone tell me if my Asus GF2 card is bad or can it be my network card is not fast enough? Here are my specs:

Abit KA7-100 mobo
K7 Athlon 700@950mhz oc
30GB Maxtor ATA100 7200rpm
10 mbps linksys NIC
SB Live! Value
Asus V7700 deluxe GF2 GTS 32 DDR (did not oc)

Any help would be appreciated.

It appears, since you are getting the disconnected icon, that the card is not the problem. Have you changed anything about the way you connect to the net?

PS I do not play UT anylonger, but I have always heard that VooDoo cards play any Unreal engine based games better, because they are optimized for Glide.

I have a similar setup...while I have't played UT in awhile (CS now), I did have a similar problem when using OpenGL--I switched to D3D and it went away--however, my pause never showed disconnect.

With the disconnect showing, I don't think video is your problem. Can you give us all some details on your Network config, protocols, etc.?

I have a similar problem with UT, which is the only thing keeping me from playing online. First of all, i'm on a Tbird 800, 256 ram, voodoo5, and a good DSL connection. When i'm playing UT online, no matter how good the server is, or what my ping is, about every 30 secondsn to 2 minutes my ping will go up to about 20,000 (you read that right) for a few seconds. During that time, the disconnect icon will usually appear. then, just as quickly as it game, it dissapears, until the next 30 seconds comes by. This is the only online game this happensn to me in, and believe me, i play a lot online. And yes, my connection is set to "cable/dsl" in the UT properties. changing it around doesn't seem to do anything though.

Gnoghugs,

I have not change anything since I swap out the video card. I also tried different drivers both from Asus and NVIDIA D3. The "LAG" problem still exist and exist only while playing UT online.

Hrm???

That's strange

Since 3 of you have (or have had), the problem, I would be shocked if it's not documented.
I would suggest UT forums somewhere or a UT FAQ.
I would het to give up OGL in UT, it looked so much better.

Sorry I can't be of more help

DOACleric,

I hear your problem...it's just like my situation....except different video cards...
what resolution are you playing at? My "lag" exist frequestly when I play UT at 1280X768 or higher. However, I noticed is much less frequent when I play UT at 800X600. But then again, why would I want to play at that resolution with GF2 GTS? right?

aj_uf,

I tried it in both modes(open GL and D3D). problem still exist.

running only TCP/IP
I have Linksys router with 1 port going to my hub. The router makes PPPoE connect with keep alive.
Verizon DSL infospeed
Not sure what other information u need.

I wonder if playing online games (UT) running 800X600 vs 1280X768 resolution requires different bandwidth? Does playing at higher resolution need more bandwidth? Anyone?

I don't think it is your video card. I have been playing UT for a very long time and I have found that the internet connection is not so great. The most common problems that I have found that cause lag are the following.

1. The people who set up the servers set them up for more players than the processing power of the server can handle. Hence, if you have too many people playing in a game you get a slow down from the bandwith requirement and because the server processor has to process a lot of information.

2. When a server adds non standard plugins then each player who joins the server must download all of those plugins. This really sucks up the bandwith of the server and usually brings the game to a near standstill pings often getin into the 1000s with 50% lost packets.

I don't know if these issues could be addressed by the UT progamers but they sure are annoying.

I try to avoid servers with plugins (you only know if a server has plugins when you try to join it and it starts to download them) I just quit the server and look for another one. Also, I look for servers that keep the upper limit on players at about 8. I find these things to help with UT lag problems.

Hope my $.02 helps.

Hey, thats strange... i'm also using Verizon DSL. And i've only had that problem since i've been using them. I don't notice that theh resolution that i'm playing at has any effect. I've also tried many, many different servers, and no matter how good or bad the server is, they all seem to have this problem. I'm not sure if it UT's fault, or if its somehow related to the ISP. However, its strange that no other online game has this problem.

Nah, the resolution has nothing to do with your bandwith. I own up UT with a 26.4 connect, and i play at 1024X768. No lag with the video, other then the normal 250-300ms shot lag. My vid card don't lag though. I have a V6800 with a cerlery 466, and 256 meg 'o' ram.

If you're using Verizon DSL with a PPPoE connection of any sort under win9x, you'll get DHCP polls for about the interval you said. Try going into tcp/ip for the NIC and setting the IP to 192.168.69.69 and make sure wins resolution is Disabled not set to use DHCP. Haven't played with the routers much so I'm not sure if their internal PPPoE has the same problem. You could test by hooking the DSL modem up by itself and using a PPPoE program like WinPoet or RASPPPoE to test.

Hi all,

I got the problem solved. I figure I should share with ya all. The problem is not the video card but TCP/IP Stack and/or my NIC card. I removed my NIC and TCP/IP stack. Then reinstall (with differnet NIC card I just bought). I played UT for an hour last night at high resolution and no "LAG"!!! Problem solved. Although I installed a different NIC card, it's 100mbps 3COM rather then a 10mbps Linksys, I don't think it would matter. I think I just needed to reinstall my TCP/IP stack. Hope that helps.
