Why would they vote for Trump?

In March of 2016, Hillary Clinton said in a CNN town hall: "We're going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business."

This is exactly the outcome Democrats proposed, regardless of Trump being powerless to make good on his fraudulent promises of "bringing back coal". Hope for a better future inspires people a hell of a lot more than telling them to eat dirt. More than your messages of hatred for them. When I tell you to do better, it has NOTHING to do with appeasing Trump or Trump policies. It has everything to do with working class Americans and your utter failure to connect with them and to TELL them that you are there FOR them. To help them.

Clinton was at least smart enough to realize, post election, that it was a huge moment, her "greatest campaign misstep".

Would that you could listen to voices of reason. And at least attempt to win an election rather than beat down these workers with further scorn and malice. The comments in this thread are not ones for a civil discourse. But something that beggars any hope of restitution with those who feel abandoned. Mine is an aim to reach out and offer them a path forward with Democrats. To show them OUR hope for a better future. If only you had any.

Here is what she said in context:

So for example, I'm the only candidate which has a policy about how to bring economic opportunity using clean renewable energy as the key into coal country. Because we're going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business, right?

And we're going to make it clear that we don't want to forget those people. Those people labored in those mines for generations, losing their health, often losing their lives to turn on our lights and power our factories.

Now we've got to move away from coal and all the other fossil fuels, but I don't want to move away from the people who did the best they could to produce the energy that we relied on.

And she proposed spending $30B in aid to these places to take care of the people who can't work anymore and to train the ones that can to relevant industries.

Who's going to let them languish as their pensions and healthcare go bust?

The people they elected.

Why should society care to try to fully fund their pensions? At rock bottom, they have a lot of company. Coal miners were hardly the poorest in their communities. You could start out at $60-70K with no higher education.

Feel free to lobby for unpaid wages to be jumped to the top of the heap ahead of secured creditors in a bankruptcy process. I'll not hold my breath for the GOP to back that one.

Not unlike the Obama admin who screwed over the nonunion workers in favor of the unionized GM workers. Democrats also are definitely OK with taxing people with less in order to lavish certain special interest groups.

Always organize. Nobody should leave their interests to companies or the government. Maybe be politically wary of the people trying to tear down unions wherever they find them.

True that many of them were. This is less true now and there are probably a half dozen people running for president on pro-labor platforms who would sign such legislation.

And Clinton actually had a plan to address the impact. She spoke the truth and was willing to help them move on to jobs that had an actual future. Trump just had empty promises and simple solutions for simple minded people.

That's because it's hard, dirty & dangerous.

Exactly how did the Obama admin screw non-union workers? When was the last time Dems raised taxes on the working class?

I know that. I acknowledged in the other thread people don't want to do manual labor for a reason. But specifically why should the government care to take up the slack? If the company doesn't have the money,, well, it's not like Democrats are even attempting to give anyone else a pension who have vastly less hourly wages. Pensions also aren't great at attracting or retaining people, so the vast majority of coal miners probably would have done it regardless even if they knew in advance.

Do you really think Democrats tax only the rich? Who pays property tax? Who pays sales tax? Come October in CA, no one will be able to evade sales tax anymore. What's going to be done with the money? It's mostly going to cops who average six figures now in CA and have ironclad pensions and health care. Democrats are largely responsible for the locked in egregious benefits and now they're looking for more money in order to get more hires. It's no wonder why people making $30K or less here are leaving in droves. You have to abosolutely room up or settle for zero disposable income.

Police officers earned, on average, about $91,000 in regular pay, another $20,000 in overtime and about $11,000 in other pay during 2017.

Firefighters earned, on average, a similar amount in regular pay – $91,000 – but they also earned about $42,000 in overtime and $13,000 in other pay.

Miners getting screwed out of their final pay check is the crowning glory in all this.
No, it's not, yes, they bought Cheetos's line of BS hook, line + sinker but these are people who have heard bad news for a long time now and desperation set in. So yea, they may not be very politically aware, but if you got screwed out of the blue for 2-4 weeks pay and are unable to pay for your basic needs you'd be pissed too. The labor Dept. should step in and force payment from any bankruptcy asset sales.

That's sarcasm.

I sincerely hope it happens to each and every one of you scumbags that think people deserve to be screwed over for their labor.

Christ, it could be a woman who works HR or something for all you know - nothing to do with ranting and raving for coal or for Trump.

You guys have such a narrow mindset - it really shows what pieces of shit you insignificant fucks are.

Oh well. Survival of the fittest. And the socio-economic conditions in those hills means they produce dumb people.

I can assure you that "some woman in HR" didn't make the decision for the company to file for bankruptcy or cause their paychecks to bounce.

What's the conservative saying when it comes to protesters blocking a road? 'Run them down?' Do they also endorse miners being run over by a train, or is it different now?

Regardless of their political stupidity/nativity any man/woman who put in the Hrs needs to be paid for them, plain and simple. Not talking about the bleak future of coal here or anything else, PAY THESE people what they are owed. If YOU spent 3 weeks working in a coal mine or anywhere for that matter, only to be issued a worthless paycheck how would you react?.

Voting has policy consequences. This is some of them.
Since when is screwing someone out of legally earned wages OK because they voted for Trump?. I hate the Cheeto as much as anyone, but what's plain wrong does not change.

Oh please like you give a flying fuck about these people you fucking full of shit clown.

For fuck's sake, seriously? And you wonder why people call you a dumbass constantly. "It totally could've just been this one random bad person for all we know", just wow. When I think you couldn't possibly be more of a raging shithead, you always prove me wrong.

Says possibly the single dumbest moron on these forums (since John Connor isn't around any more, you've pretty much taken that mantle), that consistently immediately jumps to the dumbest fucking conclusions and then refuses any and all discussions and evidence that refutes it then just starts doing what you're criticizing others for. You really are a special kind of stupid. You've chosen to be stupid and then get mad when people point it out and then just decide that well fuck it you might as well go for maximum stupidity at all times.

thats capitalism. Where would the money come from in a bankruptcy? Thw wealthy owner sheltered his wealth from the risks of that when he made the corporation.

Maybe vote for more pro labor politicians then. Morally I don’t disagree, this company should have known for months that it was going under yet they still operated right till the rope ran out leaving people with empty pockets. I humbly submit they shouldn’t be allowed to do that.

Which is exactly people's fucking point. Vote for shitheads like Turmp and Mitch (and the horrible Republican policies in general) and you get consequences like this. No shit its bad, but that's what you get when you vote horrible fucking people with horrible policies into office. People need to start understanding that their voting is a major source of their misery so they can hopefully change how they vote.

It sucks that they aren't getting paid but like others have said already elections have consequences. The people got exactly what they have been voting for all of their lives and they are not happy about the outcome. I think that maybe they need to actually start paying attention to what the people they vote for are doing instead of being single-issue voters and immediately pulling the lever on anyone with an R next to their name because "the evil Demonrat wants to take my gun".
