Well, if you are young and full of energy, you can join the hardworking labor force and learn how to climb and trim trees for your local power company

they may have lots of jobs, but don't you need some kind of school or training doing that stuff? they don't hire off the street do they?

I was laid off at the end of December last year for 2 months. Took a 6 month call center contract. I haven't stopped looking but there isn't much out there in my area. I've even applied to several entry level jobs without any response.

I need out of this job soon. I did 4 years in call center as my 1st real job and hated it. I just can't stand being a slave to a phone like this.

I left a network admin job that was pretty restrictive and pay was pretty much capped. But it was 100% secure in that I ran the show, and I pretty much answered to nobody (and the people that I did answer to took my word as gospel for the most part). I could have worked there forever, but wouldn't have wanted to work there forever.

I went to a technical sales position (which I had done in a previous life) with a company and people I had known from the previous life. Big company, small # of people, just the market took a serious nose dive in pricing (not in demand though) and the profit margins slumped. Bad. The market is in a race to zero basically.

That being said, I know that they laid off everyone hired after me, the remaining core of 4-5 people are taking a 25% pay cut etc etc etc

Sorry to hear Homerboy.

Going from a "recession" to a "depression" now.

Shitty. I live around Detroit and it is bad, but people are happy about some plants reopening... signs of hope for people looking for jobs around here.

Bummer man. I hope it works out soon for you. Scary times to be living in for sure, although I keep hoping we're near the worst of it and it'll all turn around soon.

Our company announced a few layoffs today, however it's always been this way . A competitor of ours, J&J, are known to hire people like they're temps and fire them after 1-2 years of employment. These CEO's have these "visions" or missions, and when they see they can't work they move on and hire another CEO in his wake who have different goals in mind.

What sucks is I left of job of complete security for this higher paying, higher freedom gamble. And I lost.

Don't ever put yourself down for trying to better yourself. That's exactly what you should be doing all the time. A company is not going to need your skills or job forever, and being subject to a layoff is natural. You'd be considered one lucky man to go through a whole career without being a victim of a layoff.

Sucks. Happened to me just over 2 weeks ago. Luckily I?ve found some more contract work in the same industry paying a daily rate of £275, which is a little less than what I was on before.

I?m sure there?s more work out there for you.

Good luck!

Well the GOOD news is my wife's little business (which has been steadily growing) was just asked to be a vendor at the WI State Fair main exhibitor's hall. Over a million people go to the WI State Fair, so that's a hell of a lot of foot traffic. Hell if .1% of the people buy SOMETHING the revenue (and publicity) would be great. Sadly we have to come up with some serious cash for expenses, fees etc. Lemons into lemonade right?

FYI: already applied of unemployment
