it was a spare.

you should be able to find one or two 24 port switches (netgear, smc, et all) for pretty cheap I would think.

I've hosted small LAN parties (max 6) and the majority of the time, we play Counter-Strike. My DSL line holds 6 people just fine and we always play on the same server at the same time. Everyone is connected to one of my two swiches and if I ever need more people to connect, I have a few hubs around.

What I really would like is a LAN party for Serious Sam2 or Operation Flashpoint.

I've hosted a couple of parties of 8-10 people. One problem that seemed to come up a lot (especially since LAN gaming doesn't happen as often as it should ) is that people spend way too much time trying to patch their systems and get maps, etc. I usually set of a POS non-game box as a fileserver to host the patches and maps that are relevent to the evening's gameplay.
Usually with a smallish group like that we try to stay focused on one or two games. A combination of Unreal Tournament and Red Alert seems to feed the cerebral and reflexive halves of the brain.
For connectivity I use a 5 or 8 port switch for file and game servers as well as to connect to hubs. I also use a 24 port Cabletron 10BT hub with a 100Mb uplink to the switch for game clients.
Don't forget lots of beer and finger food (no cheetos). Friends and I also usually get burritos as part of our ritual at this Mexican joint that's open until 3am. Gotta fuel the fire before getting back to it!
Have fun gaming!

For the network gurus- if a MAC address is spoofed, what prevents packet sniffing if the traffic is redirected to the spoofed address?

I can't figure out how to get multiple people on the same server with the same connection....

What do you do? What router? Any special thing you need to do? This is of course with 6 different cd-keys. I still can't get it to work.

Largest one i've been to was about 60+ people. Every body brought a computer to the auditorium and there were two servers hosting three-four games. Games were Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, C & C Red Alert, and Soldier of Fortune. Lots of pizza, popcorn. Tons of beer. AND A VERY SWEET 52" TV showing Gladiator and Saving private ryan.

A few hundred at @LANta.con.
It was AWESOME. The site still says @LANta.con 2002 is up for the end of this month, but I emailed them about the lack of updates and they said it is canceled this year
I'm trying to start my own smaller one (~50 ppl?) so all my friends will be able to use the days off they requested...

I havn't yeat... but maybe to summer I'm going to dreamhack. last year it was over 5000 people there. On the website it says that it's the biggest lan and demoparty in the world (true???). New this year, DreamHack will be on summer and winter. the "demothings" are on the winter.

I hub IS NOT A layer 2 device its LAYER 1. The reason why you would like to use a switch is because it looks at the MAC address of where you are sending the data then "switches" it through the use of Application-Specific Intergrated Circuts (ASICs). Switches are also faster than routers because they do not have to look at the NEtwork layer header for information. Because of the switching done a switch can provide a dedicated amount of speed (what it is rate is what the user gets). A hub on the other hand is different and is only a layer 1 device because it only has to do with the pysical aspect of the network. It DOES NOT look into any header rather it forward everything and makes a bigger collision domain. When a Hub is rated at a certain speed that speed is for the whole hub and not the users in every port.

I was at a LAN party this past weekend. We ended up playing C&C: Renegade and Mechwarrior 4:Vegenence+Black Knight. There were 9 people there so the teams were unbalanced. I was on the team with 4 ppl and it was hard to turn the other team back in Renegade. We did much better at Mech4.

Make sure that everyone has their systems patched and ready-to-go. Impose a moratorium on system changes to a week before the party that way they can fix any issues long before they show up. You might have a few problem cases (we did), but for the most part you should be able to sit down and play.

Definitely go the route of using switches. I think for the next party, we'll be doing that.
