LAN questions...

2 Questions:
(1) If setting up a LAN to play quake or whatever, do all computers need to have the same OS?

(2) What is the best but cheap (under $50) NIC?

(1) No, you don't need the same OS.

(2) You can get a Linksys lancard for around $20-25. Really depends on the place you get it from.

no they do not, however they all have to use the same protocall. the cheapest NIC that I have found is a TrendNet (Realtek) for $15 at a local retailer.

1)no, but it helps sometimes. As long as you are not running an unpatched version of windows 95, you should be able to get it to work.

2)Get the linksys NIC. They are like $15 and work great.

Really good place to get information on network setup and games networked is the forum over at www.lanparty.com

sounds like you have your answers already...
I would get the best quality NIC you can afford (3Com is my personal preference).
