I have two computers that I am trying to lan up to do some gaming on, but I am having trouble with the LAN. Both systems are running windows xp and the lan drivers are installed correctly, but I cannot get them to "lan up". Any suggestions. Historically when I have done this under windows 98 all I had to do was install the lan card and plug in the network cables. Is there something different with windows xp that I need to know about???

Are they in the same workgroup? How about Subnet?

That means you haven't tried it? Try it.
If they can, you should be fine. PEBCAK, most likely.

If they can't, check your IP settings.

Have you tried the Network Setup Wizard?
Start/All Programs/Accessories/Communications/Network Setup Wizard

Do it manually:
My Computer -> Properties -> Computer Name -> Change -> set workgroup name
Then:
Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Local Area Connection -> Properties -> TCP/IP -> Properties -> Use the following IP address 192.168.0.1 (the other pc 192.168.0.2) Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 (for both), leave the rest boxes empty -> OK

Then start console (Run -> cmd), type: ping 192.168.0.2 and ping 102.168.01 to make sure everything is correct.

If ping fails: disable firewall, go to Network Connections choose repair connection, restrart etc...

It's only difficult the first time

Are you using a router? Crossover or patch cable?

Just checking, you never know...

I am using a switch with the correct cables. I did what Wiktor said and the ping failed. It said request timed out. So i tried repair connection and still ping timed out.

EDIT: Sorry guys I figured out how to disable my firewall. Ping works now.
