Learn when you bosses listen in on your calls. When they do treat the customers like kings. When they aren't, you can slack off. Used to work for at&t wireless as a phone rep before cingular bought us out. Expect to deal with some asshole customers...

Tips?

don't take it personally when the customers get nasty or obnoxious and start abusing you. they just think that kind of behaviour will get them what they want.

But usually they are right. Unless you run into someone who has already had dozens of irate calls that day, and doesn't feel like dealing with it anymore.

Just find out the exact limits of what you can say/do to customers, and get as close to them as you can. Call Centre work sucks in general, being as it's just well paid slave labour, with a great benefits package. *works at NuComm International* It's odd when one gets better benefits than a nurse.
Most important thing is to enjoy the work you do, if you don't, you will probably burn out within a few weeks. Count yourself lucky that it's just Canadians though, credit and natual American rudeness don't blend together very well.

My wife works for a 3rd party CSR company, currently providing support for Cingular/ATT Wireless. She's been there over a year and a half, she's had her share of aholes, but also her share of really nice customers. As in any business where you deal with the general public, there's a bit of anything.

You just have to be good at difusing any situation. Always make the customer think you are on theit side (even if after you hang up you tell everyone what a jackass he was). Make sure you LISTEN carefully to what they say.

Just think of any time you called for support on something and had to explain things over and over becfause the idiot on the other end wasn't lsitening or was incompetant or whatever. THen try to NOT be like that.

That's true, but Canadians on a whole are a lot kinder and easier to deal with. I regret every single day I have to deal with ComCast's Baltimore billing issues, as they are some of the rudest people when they have billing mistakes, or past due balances.

My wife is Canadian actually ...the company she works for is US based, as is Cingular/ATT obviously, but her branch is up in BC, and I'd say she's a very nice person?
