Need some personal experienced advice on laptops...have it narrowed down to the Asus L3s, the Dell latitude 840 and the Compaq 1500....am about fed up with dell...wanted and inspiron and they refuse to sell it with win2k...trying to shove xp down my throat...that is real customer service for you... The Asus is yet to be released....the latitude is 256 megs ram, and 1.6ghz p4 .....the compaq is p4 2ghz with 512 megs ram for 100 bucks cheaper than the latitude...now I know how to figure, but why such a price difference? Anyone have a compaq that can tell me about the build quality of the presario's? Anyone with any experience with either of these? Any better laptops out there? thanks..t

All I know is that the p4 selling in most laptops is the desktop version, which means it isn't optimized in any way for the laptop genere. I personally have an inspiron, I didn't care what OS they sent me (ME ick!) I just put win2k on it.

I have a lot of experience with Dell. At work we deal with nothing but Dell's.

and just so you know the only difference between the inspiron and the latitude is the pretty letters that say inspiron.

and now my experience ... the faster the processor is the hotter it is. I'm warning you! They get really hot at 1.8ghz! So i recommend a 1.6ghz. the latitudes 840 at 1.8ghz get really hot. The laptops we got these guys i wouldn't be surprised if they start complaining. They weigh 8 pounds!

i will say the setup is automatic pretty much as far as dell. Support is there also. They also have drivers on there website and everything else for you. Their support is good too. Sometimes u still gota wait but you'll have that problem anywhere.

compaqs don't know much about. i will say that they look a lot nicer then dells and a lot lighter i'm sure.

gateways look nice too.

anything else i wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

now dell's are performance and quality which is why they run really hot and are really heavy. They're desktop replacements basicly. But Dell offers a WIDE range of laptops to choose from to keep u happy however. from performance, midrang, light and super light and also mainstream too.

compaq i think has 3 or 4 choices where dell has like 15.

also remember the geforce4 440go on the dell beat out the compaqs radeon 7500 mobile. So if you want performance get Dell. Not concerned about performance? get compaq. also look into gateway too ... don't get an HP! they make awsome printers but not notebooks or desktops. which by the way u will have to go to www.hp.com, go under ummm the link next to drivers on the left and go to notebooks and choose compaq.

good luck!

Hey thanks for all the info XXS... that was really helpful...I agree on the HP... the Compaqs do look nice. Am glad you cleared up about the diff of the inspiron and the latitude...that helps a lot...I know I can put win2k on there from my disk, but it was just irritating that they really did not try to satisfy the customer...when I bought the inspiron 8000 a year and half ago, they did an OS swap from ME to win 2k for no charge and kept the warranty good...I will prob go back to Dell but it is irritating...as for drivers...chuckling..I searched and searched the other nite for the driver for the Sony crx700e cdrw in the 8000, which i gave to my son which is why i need another one, and never found the driver...But am leaning back to dell...IBM is too high on their thinkpads. I like the look of the new ASUS a lot...but they are untested i think...thanks tho for the wealth of info and your wealth of experience..it really helps..t
