Laptop battery issue

Hi,

One of our user's laptop is getting the battery replacement warning (red X mark on battery icon) and it would not charge. Here are the stuff I tried so far:

- I first tested the 'supposed' bad battery on a different laptop and it seems fine, no X mark and charging up fine.
- Swapped out a different battery (good battery) on the user's laptop and oddly it would just shut down shortly after loading into Windows.
- Put the original battery back in, gave her a new power adapter, now the battery seems to be charging up fine but there still X mark with the replacement warning.

It may be Windows giving false information, or could it be the laptop itself? I find it odd that it would just shut down when I replaced it with a different battery. I'm holding back on buying a brand new battery, anything else I could try?

I have had a laptop battery with a reset button on the battery, and I have also had a laptop with a reset battery (or something like that) option in the BIOS.

What kind of laptop, make and model? On some there is a signal pin in the power supply plug and if that pin, or the associated trace to the power jack in the laptop itself, is damaged then the system will not charge the battery.

I think as ketchup suggested, that there may be a battery reset setting either in the power management app or system bios, and that as suggested above you probably need to use a different PSU rather than a different battery.

I basically just gave her another adapter for now, laptop is Dell Vostro 3500. I will definitely check the bios regarding resetting power app. I don't have the laptop at the moment, but its scheduled for service. Here's the thing I plan to do:

- uninstall/reinstall battery driver/software/controller
- run sfc /scannow
- boot on portable OS and see if it picks up the battery being 'bad'

Anything else I could try?

Windows doesn't derive or calculate anything regarding the battery, other than estimated runtime.

The data available to Windows is this:
Capacity of battery
Design Capacity of battery
Estimated power consumption of the computer

The first two are provided by the battery pack EEPROM to the system, through the Embedded Controller

The third is provided by the PMIC or EC

The first two can vary WILDLY in accuracy depending on how the battery has been treated, including but not limited to exposure to heat, large amounts of time at 100% and still plugged into a charger, or exposure to underdischarge (depleted battery, left to sit for an extended perior)

The third is only as good as the parameters that are programmed into the devices (decent or shiat from what I've seen)

When the capacity of the battery hits a certain threshold (I want to say 70%, but not sure) of design capacity, Windows will flash the message saying "you should consider replacing your battery). Plugged in but not charging, might very well be the result of battery cell voltage misbalance within the pack, resulting in the battery EEPROM throwing a caution flag to the EC.

THERE IS A REASON BATTERIES ONLY CARRY 90 day warranties at best....BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE IGNORANT

Also...if you purchase a battery on Ebay, or from a discount seller, odds are you are buying a nice looking used battery, or a new shell with an aged set of battery cells.

/sorry, this has been a sore point at work, didn't mean to take it out on you
