I use a program called centrino hardware control to lower my cpu voltages (pentium M 1.5ghz). I believe I have it to .7v @600mhz and .95v@ 1500mhz stable. I get about 30 mins of extra battery out of it (even more if the cpu is at full load) and it runs a heck of a lot cooler (cpu fan never even comes on anymore).

Of course, it doesn't support all laptops.

I have a Dell 600m btw...

It doesn't work on my Dell C400(P3M 1.2ghz)

Sorry, got busy with school

My computer is:

Mobile AMD Sempron 2800+
512 Mb DDR
80 GB HD
Wireless 802.11g
12.1" High Resolution XGA LCD
and windows Xp home

Let me know if you need more information.

P.S.
The program i was talking about was: RightMark CPU Clock Utility, by lowering the voltage to 0.950, my battery life extended up to 3 hours (not tested. this number is according to my the computer) I did try to lower it further down, but that only resulted the computer to chrash.

Let me know what else i can do

I think Centrino Hardware Control is now (or will soon) work with AMD processors. It's an awesome program and will help you undervolt to get better battery life + cooler operating temperatures.

I think you can probably use RMClock now.

CHC Link for the lazy.
*Note that it says it'll be compatible with AMD in a few weeks. I think it's stated that for a while now, so it may be any time now.

I was just about to suggest Rightmark's software. I just started using it, as my 2GHz P4 laptop's battery life is below an hour - the battery is probably just getting old, as I bought the laptop used. For classes without an outlet handy, I lower the CPU speed to a creeping-slow 430MHz. (Oddly, I set it to 12.5%, which should be a mind-numbing 250MHz, but that's not what the program says the CPU is running at.) At that speed, it estimates 2 hours, with low CPU usage (Powerpoint open, and not much else). It runs so slow that the CPU fan rarely kicks in.
I'd love to get it to work on my main system (Athlon XP-M 2400+), so I can easily reduce the clock speed without messing around in BIOS, but RMClock just seems to lock up the system. I need it slower, because the dorm room isn't air conditioned, and a PC with 7 hard drives is already putting out a lot of heat. Yes, 7 hard drives. And a 21" monitor
Needless to say, I use my laptop most of the time, at least until the room is comfortably below 80 degrees on a regular basis.

lol, nice you have a "nice life" Jeff7, but nothing compared ot mine, YES, I AM THE GREATEST, with my computer that can run 1 - 8 hdd or 1 - 8 CD drives, i have 8 hdd in my possesion

lol, BEAT THAT

Yes, Rightmark CPU Clock is really good software

too bad i can't lower it more

EDIT:
if i reduce backlight, battery will run longer, but will it also run longer if i reduce the brightness in windows settings?
