Laptop Cdrom in regular pc?

I keep thinking about those mini shuttle pc's that have only 1 5.25 bay and one floppy bay, but i feel like im too limited since i want 2 cd drives. Would it be possible to fit 2 laptop style cd drives in a 5.25 bay? Anyone seen this before (im sure its been done if possible) links?

dunno, might work. never seen one in hand, but perhaps you'd need a modified IDE cable so it fits shorter and closer. Or maybe .. it uses only 1 IDE and it splits it to 1 drive and 1 hard disk. dunno...

dunno - but you may have 2 mod the case yourself (i.e. get a hammer and widen the opening) - i think that 2 laptop drives are a bit higher than 1 normal one. Also, there would be no adjacent holes to screw the drives to the chassis. PLUS - when thay are working thay can overheat and burn out.

why don't you get a combo drive? (DVD/CD-ROM/CD-RW)? You can always copy cd's using clone cd (1st make an image to hd - than burn from image)

Also, there are cases with just 2 drive bays - but cannot lead you to a website. They will be "slightly" larger than the shuttle, however.

Laptop cd-roms don't have normal ide connectors. They don't use a cable at all. They just have to socket that mates with a part on the notebook mb that's at the exact right place.

Actually, that connector is just the casing for the drives. If you take that off they all have a standard IDE/power connector that I believe you can find adapters to convert to a normal IDE cable. I've wondered for a while why manufacturers don't switch to using the slim drives.

It's possible, just depends on how bad you want it. Cableclub carries an adapter for laptop cdrom drives to standard ide, you'll need to buy laptop drives that use the JAE connector for it to work. Most laptop drives are not configurable for master/slave, it's preset in the firmware. Your board must have 2 ide channels. Then you'll need to mount it somehow- I've seen pics from akibara of carriers for this, may not even be available here... And the price of laptop cdrw's is steep.

I need one too but I have an IBM laptop DVD drive that has a connector that looks like the SCSI SCA connector but smaller. Anyone know where can I find a desktop adapter for it?
