Laptop cracked

I bought a new laptop last week and when opening the lid this morning the LCD spontaneously cracked. I purchased it from Amazon. Do I talk to them about replacement or go to Dell the manufacturer? The screen literally broke while I was just opening it. I'm worried that they are going to say I dropped it. Instead of it being a faulty device and demand I pay for repair. I think I'm going to talk with Amazon customer service first. What is the best course of action if they demand a fee/payment? Credit card charge back?

Another person had the same issue. Though apparently their forums are down at the moment so I used the google cached page.

Nothing to lose by trying I suppose. If one fails, try the other option. If they both if you less than full replacement choose the lesser of two evils.

Try Amazon. Then try Dell costumer support... Then try Dells twitter and Facebook page if they don't help you. Companies are reacting quickly to problems brought up on public social networks. They want to look good to the public

All I can say is good luck. I would also try Amazon first, they are usually more consumer oriented.

They will probably say it was abuse, as it is pretty hard to break an LCD just by opening it normally.

I've had 2 friends that had a new laptop display shatter (they said) all by itself and 1 that had a TV with broken internal LCD (not the glass) when unpacked.
All were replaced at the retailer level although 1 had to argue a bit.

I also had a relative that slammed the lid down and broke it. I fixed it with a $50 LCD.

I'm just saying that it is not normal for an LCD Screen to crack by just opening it normally.

Dropping it would show other signs, usually cracked corners or at least dents/scratches. I've dropped several laptops over the years (some on purpose... for science) and none have had the screen crack. The only things that have happened are the hinges break, or other peripherals break. I had an old Compaq I used as a browser take a serious fall onto tile and all that happened was the floppy drive dislodged.

I've seen screens crack by themselves for no real reason other than bad engineering and faulty design. Apple was pretty notorious for having a terrible design in the screen mounting that would lead to issues. I've dealt with a few cracked Macbooks with the same issue (internal cracking/damage over time under the bezel).

I'd RMA via Amazon and refuse to pay anything. If they insist, then try Dell. If you're only left with a choice of picking up the bill, depending on the cost then I'd look into a replacement screen on ebay and do it yourself cheap.
