The rebate form states that the Inspiron 2500 w/ 12" screen does not qualify for the rebate.

I would hate having a 2.5" border around a 12" screen. It just looks ugly.

Save another $13.98 (2% of $699.00) by ordering through eBates.com

This is an excellent deal for an entry level laptop but people need to be aware of it's shortcomings:
1) 12.1 inch SVGA TFT active-matrix display with 800 x 600 resolution - not good.
2) Only a 900MHz Intel Celeron? Processor even if you wanted to get the P3/900 or P3/1G you can't unless you select MS Office XP and 15" which is $1,427!
3) Only one choice for a 10GB Hard Drive which is probably sufficient for most users but the choice of a 20GB or 30GB would be nice.
4) The standard battery is the weakling 27 WHr Lithium-Ion 4Cell Battery instead of the 59 WHr 8 cell which they do sell for an additional $99.
5) Floppy drive costs an extra $29, but when's the last time you used a floppy drive? It adds bulk to the laptops weight.
6) The cheapest network adapter is 3 COM 10/100 Ethernet II Card [add $119], no thanks.
7) Last but not least carefully read the tech specs for any further shortcomings, know exactly what you're getting before buying it.

Instead I would buy this Gateway laptop for $999 with no rebate hassles or upgrade to the Toyota Camry/Honda Accord of Dell laptops, the Dell Inspiron 4100:

Actually right now isn't the best time to buy a Dell Inspiron 4100, I'd wait a few weeks for better specials such as a free Palm or $150-$200 rebate offer. Here's a great offer that they had for $1,026 which ended 2/28/2002 and was loaded.

$1,309.00 base price as configured below
-$75 off Dell Home coupon for Inspiron laptops costing $1,000 or more
-2% eBates.com
-free ground shipping ($95 savings)

weird. my cart says savings of 200bucks w/ the 12".

however, when you click on the top right description that says "$200 Off with purchase of 12" screen. Expires 3/13/2002", the instant savings is $100.

anyways, the final price is still $550 w/ MIR

Snip from the rebate form:

TO RECEIVE YOUR MAIL-IN REBATE:
1. Purchase a qualifying Dell Inspiron 8100, 8200, 4100 or 2500 (with a 14? or 15? screen) notebook
from the Dell Small Business Center with an order date between March 7, 2002 and March 13, 2002

The $150 MIR clearly states that Inspiron 2500 (with 12" screen) not included in rebate eligibility.

So, the final cost will be:

($699.00 X sales tax) + ($699 X .98 (2 % discount through eb@tes)) = around $740 shipped.

You need to update your thread title since we have found out that this is not possible with the 12-inch display.

no one should have a 12.1 screen i dont care what the reason. its tiny compared to 14 and definitely worth the upgrade. (15 isnt as noticeable compared to 14)
unlike desktops, you really cant upgrade notebooks later so it would be a grave mistake

12" screen is not so bad IF the laptop is a superslim; but the dell 2500 is no such beast. It's designed around a much bigger full size laptop style case, thus you'll be kicking yourself evertime you boot up, with the huge borders on the side of the screen, reminding you the extra $200 could have made you so much happier.

Why are you guys coughing so much about Dell? There is another therad about Toshiba laptop deal for $699 AR at BB. IMHO that is a lot better deal than this crappy Dell. BB has for $799 and Toshiba has $100 MIR. I spoke with Dell, (I mean Hell) CSR yesterday and he checked with BB offer and said he could not do anything about it and that shameless CSR did not care to say even sorry for wasting my time. Here is BB lappy link.
