Laptop Decision

Hey guys,

I've been researching laptops recently. I used the search function to look for advice on building a gaming laptop, but I'm still undecided.

Here's my situation. My current computer is alright:

Athlon 64 3000+ (recently bought)
1 gig ram (various speeds, so relatively slow)
120 gig and 80 gig hd's (lots of storage for... things)
ATI Radeon 9700 (Pro? not sure, got it from Dell a long time ago, needs upgrading)
MSI NEO K8N motherboard... I think, it's good whatever it is.
17 Inch Abit trinitron CRT monitor
Sony DVD+/-RW burner... 4X?
Case is that one quiet award winning one, pretty good, also recently bought.

Still, it's kind of a frankenstein, so it does run slowly randomly etc. Now, the reason I've been looking at laptops is because I hate being chained to my desk. I've got wireless all over my apartment, in my living room, in my roommate's room etc. So I'd like to be able to play a game with my roommate in his room if I'd like, sit on the couch with my gf and use my comp if I want, or even easily take it over to another person's house. And you can really only get this from a laptop.

Now realize I spend about 70% of my time with my comp gaming, so that's important. I'm not as insane about gaming graphics as some, I've dealt with my ATI 9700 for a while, though I do plan on playing stuff like HL2 etc.

So, I figured I could do one of two things in looking at a laptop. I could go for a reasonably priced one, around 1000 bucks, that's a decent workhorse, lighter, and longer battery life, meaning it'd be more portable (though most of my portability plans will be around the house, which will be near power plugs). Of course this one would kinda chug if I wanted to play HL2 in the living room, go to LAN somewhere, and would be "outdated" much faster.

The other option is going for a "desktop replacement", basically a heavy, hot, low battery life monster with a 15.4 or 17 inch screen, and just sell or give away my desktop. This way I would basically just have a portable computer that's as good as the one I have now if not better, that I could even hook up to a monitor, keyboard, mouse combo if I wanted.

I haven't spent much time researching the lighter, cheaper variety, because it's hard to find one that's both light, long battery life, and yet still able to handle gaming. One I've seen is the Dell 8600:

Link

Of course it's only got a Radeon mobility 9000, and isn't a scremer, but it's reasonably light, not too expensive etc.

Now, for desktop replacements I've been doing a lot of research. The two main contenders I've come down to are the Dell Inspirion XPS and the Sager 8790. Alienware, Voodoo etc were just too expensive for not enough power.

The XPS is here. Basically, it's a screamer, P4 3.4 ghz, 1 gig of ram, and the only laptop to get the mobility Radeon 9800, which is basically the same as a desktop X800. Of course they don't have 17 inch screens, only 15.4, and even with dell's price cuts it's pretty expensive. Apparently Dell has a deal with ATI that they're the only ones allowed to sell the 9800 for the first month of their release.

Now, the Sager can be found here. It's basicaly the same comp, with a 17 inch screen, it can get a 256 meg mobility 9700, not 9800. When I priced out the two, exact same features, the Sager was like 300 dollars less, with a 17 inch screen instead of 15.4, and 256 meg mobility 9700, while Dell had a 128 meg one. Plus you can get integrated Tv tuner etc.

So the Sager is cheaper, bigger screen, but doesn't have the 9800. Now, some people are saying to wait a month or two, because Sager is going to release laptops that support PCI express, with new vidcards and everything, and Dell won't have their stranglehold on the 9800 anymore.

Ok, so what do you all think? First of all, with my current setup, is it worth buying a desktop replacement, or should I just get something servicable as a light laptop, or should I just forget the laptop idea and deal with it? And if I should get a laptop, which kind would you recommend?

Damint, I typed a big ol' reply and then my wireless had to disconnect and I lost it when I tried to post.
Um, as a quick re-do:
For thin-and-light, check out HP or Toshiba offerings. Won't be the strongest gaming machines, but IMO are better than Dell's offerings and you can get them locally. You also won't hit your $1000 budget, but IMO I wouldn't waste $1000 on on a Dell.
For your DTR, I would wait it out a couple months. PCI-E and 9800 availability will make investing a DTR a LOT more worthwhile. I would also try to find an A64 system, as A64>>P4 in gaming. If you would be using it strictly for gaming, I think that would be worthwhile. However, I doubt PCI-E will be available in notebooks for a while; as PCI-E is JUST coming out for the A64 desktop systems. In the coming months, if you can get a PCI-E based P4 system with swappable video cards/etc, then that would be your best bet IMO.
DISCLAIMER: THE OPINIONS ABOVE ARE JUST THAT, OPINIONS. IF YOU DISAGREE, THEN SHARE YOUR OPINION AND DON'T BASH MINE.
Sorry, but people who post in this topic seem to be know-it-all gods who have to put down those who have a differing opinion.

Thanks for the reply. As I've been researching, I'm actually leaning more toward a lighter lappy with a longer battery life than a DTR. But I'd still like to be able to game on it.

I've been looking at Athlon 64's, but the Sager that has it (and a 17 inch screen, which would be nice), is 9 pounds, dunno about the battery life.

Sager also has a Centrino that's 6 pounds, and most likely longer battery life, but only has a 15.4 inch screen. I've heard Centrino are relatively fast, can allow for lighter laptops, and have less battery drain.

Then again, maybe that's the Dothan. Or are Centrino and Dothan the same thing? And are they significantly slower than the Athlon 64's?

Dothan CPU and an ATI 9600 or higher should fit your bill. IBM, HP/Compaq, Dell, eMachines, they all make them, it's just a matter of how much you want to pay and how much quality means to you. My HP/Compaq NC8000 works well as a desktop replacement, yet is light and portable. Nothing like playing Madden 2005 on the leather recliner while watching the real thing on the big screen in the living room. Plus my wife kicks me out of our computer room when she wants to watch Law and Order and do bills on her desktop PC. Which is fine with me, I got a more comfortable seat and a bigger tv!

Is there a difference between Centrino and Dothan? And how do I measure that in terms of real Ghz I'm used to, where like 3.0 and over is good?

Plus, I don't see much mention of Sager on these boards. I priced out a 2.0 ghz pentium M, 1 gig ram, 8X dvd burner, 40 gig HD on Dell and it came to $2,327. on PCTorque a Sager with those same specs was 1944.00. And the Sager had a 15.4 Widescreen WSXGA screen, while Dell was 14 inch, and the Sager had 128 Radeon Mobility 9700, while Dell was just "64 MB video".

i have a mitac 8050 based 1.7 dothan with a 64mb , and play a lot of dawn of war, battlefront, bfv, and find for a laptop it does a great job. it's not as powerful as a dtr but it doesn't heat up or use as much power, for a good middle of the road solution.

The dothan is the second generation of the pentium m, which is part of the centrino chipset, which includes pentium m, 855 mobo chip and intel wireless chip. the first pentium m was the banais. banais had 1mb cache, where dothan has 2mb. great chip and a great solution for gaming.
I know there are some out there with 9700 /128-256mb ram, fairly light and good on power.

Dothan = New Pentium-M Model
Centrino = Pentium M + Intel Wireless + Intel Motherboard

I have heard nothing but very positive things about Sager. If I didn't get in on that great Dell deal, I'd have gotten a Sager. The specs, quality and support are hard to beat. Anyhoo, I would also recommend the 8600 if you can find another killer deal. I bought this as a DTR machine and I have been extremely happy so far. Screen res is great, the 9600 Pro is more than enough to play new games on the road, and the battery life is very good as well. Not mention, it's only a shade over 7 pounds.
