Laptop - Dell or Gateway?

Soon as I can find a good deal on a used one, I'm getting a Thinkpad. Screw Dell! I had an Inspiron and the thing felt flimsy as hell. Bleh.

The same company that manufactures Gateway's laptops also manufactures dell's laptops. They all come from taiwan.

Personally, I'd rather get a Gateway just because of the fact that they have physical stores that I coudl take the laptop to if something were to go wrong.

Another vote for Dell....gateways tend to break more often. And the company will probably go under in a few years

IBM Thinkpad owns you, my T20 is getting a bit long in the tooth but it got me through my first 2 yrs of college (CS major), getting a T40P this summer , employee discount helps cover the IBM premium

Unless you get one of the lighter models, but those aren't as competively priced.

From experience, Dell. I remember having to setup a Gateway.. and you can only fix it using their restore CD... something like that.. there were other residential computer consultants complaining the same.

Guys, I just had my first experiencing with Dell tech support and spent 1 hr 30 mins on the phone and got nowhere. Even if you got the 3yr warranty or the CompleteCare, trying to get them to take the caltop back would probably turn out to be an act of congress.

Bang for your buck is good, but when you need the OEM to honor their warranty, how much red tape is too much for you?
