A friend of mine fainted/fell right onto my laptop as I was working on it. The guy is ok now, but the whole screen, including the cover, has warped, cracked and the LCD inside has shattered.

Is there any way to salvage this? Can the whole lid be replaced ?

Laptop: Compaq Presario V2565us

I need to get some really important data off of this, and need some kind of input.

Am already on the phone with HP support.

Just got done with HP. They said since I have only the regular warranty, they would have to charge me $700 to change the whole thing out. Anyone know where I can find the whole part (lid: LCD + Frame) for cheap? This is widescreen, so I guess there are still not as many refurbs out in the wild.

What do you mean by 'important data'? If you're concerned about the data on your harddrive, then it's a simple matter of just removing the drive and attaching it to a USB 2.5" drive enclosure (~$10-$30) to another computer.

If you do a search on HPs site for your laptop you should find that the replacement part number is 394349-001 (double check though cuz I won't be held responsible if you get the wrong one!).

Then go to ebay and do a search for that screen:

LCD part # 394349

You just need to install it yourself then or find someone who can do it. It shouldn't be that hard...just a few screws.

Or you can strip it for parts, sell it on ebay and buy a new laptop. Those models are currently selling for $800 on ebay. Parts might get you $400 or so.

i'd be sending a bill to my "friend" for this one! is there not a vga port on that laptop? worst case you boot it with a monitor and transfer your mp3s off of it and replace the laptop.

Exactly. Boot it up, wait until Windows is fully booted, connect VGA cable to external monitor, and press the apropriate Fn+F keys to activate the VGA output.

Or remove the HDD, purchase external 2.5" enclosure, and hook it up to any other computer.

Definitely eBay for the screen.

Thanks for the input guys... esp. TheCanuck. I'm at work right now, and I salvaged a monitor I can use as external output. The LCD itself looks trippy when I poweron!

The hinge seems damaged too... will that be an issue when I try to replace the screen? Or does the whole thing come off?

Just happy that I'm not gonna be fired because I can access those "mp3" files in the laptop.

Here's the service manual for the V2000:

V2000 Manual

Should show you how to remove the screen / install the replacement. I browsed through it and the part numbers in the manual are different than HP's site (373055 [glossy] & 367784)...but the ones on ebay do look like they are compatible. The first model # I posted might not be the glossy screen.

Best to double check the part number with HP before you buy one though.

Thanks again! I was just going to ask whether anyone could find the disassembly instructions.

I just talked to the guy who is auctioning the part, and it looks looks compatible. I will be checking very thoroughly before I buy.

If the hinge is damaged, then it might have damged the mounting of the screen bezel to the chassis itself... At that point it may not be worth fixing.
