laptop issues

Alright, so I'm having a couple of issues with my laptop that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I have a toshiba satelite and I'm running windows vista. There are two issues that I have tried researching and ran a few trial and error fixes that haven't worked.
One: The touchpad and buttons have stopped working.
T&E attempts: I went into the control panel and made sure that the enable option was clicked. I also uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them. I tried to use the function keys to turn the pad on and off and have had no response.
Two: I have a 110 gig harddrive and I am only showing 14 gigs of unused space. I do not have any games, music, video, or pictures loaded on it so I can't figure out why so much space is used up.
T&E attempts: I ran a disk cleanup and gained about a half a gig. I also ran a defrag and gained about 5 gigs back. It just seems odd to me that I would be using that much capacity without having anything other than operating software loaded.
Any information or answers to these problems is much appreciated.

the touchpad and built in keyboard are both not working?
if so, did something happen to your notebook to cause this?

is the touchpad & keyboard detected correctly in your device manager? (right click computer -> device manager)

you might have to open up your notebook to physically check the keyboard connector

do you have any programs installed on your toshiba?
windows does tend to accumulate stuff through updates, but i've never heard of a relatively clean hard drive with just windows and some office programs and web browsers take up anywhere near that.

have you tried scanning your computer with an antivirus?

it's kind of hard to tell what could be using up so much disk space
a significant amount of it should be in your program files folder(s)
a large amount should be in the windows folder
most of the rest should be in your user folder (my documents/downloads/etc)
you can check this by right clicking on the folders and selecting properties
there might be some hidden folders, so the sum won't necessarily match your total used space

if you delete stuff without emptying your recycle bin, be aware that the recycle bin still counts as used space. Typically the recycle bin can account for up to 10-20% of used space. you have to empty the recycle bin to have windows include that hard drive space as unused

how much hard drive space is taken up by each of those?

Can you get any reaction to pressing any of the "f" keys at system boot - f1, f2, f10, f12 or something along those lines to get into system bios?

Check the event viewer and see if you are getting red "x" or yellow warning messages - specifically under system or application.

Try cleaning up some system restore points - you may have some old ones that could be eating up space.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 305CDS and don't know anything about it. I figured out how to connect to the internet but it won't let me search much of anything. I thought maybe there's an update for it? Can anyone offer suggestions on at least who I contact for that kind of problem?

You can call 1-800-Toshiba, but I think they going to laugh and hang up on you!

Boot the laptop into safe mode, if the TP button still don't work then either it is turn off in the bios or it is broken. As for the hard drive you will have to go through it and see what kind of junk you have in there.

I'm sorry guys. I need to clarify that the keyboard is working, but it's the mouse pad click buttons that aren't working. I have full use of the keyboard but everything dealing with the mouse just won't react to anything I do.
Yes I have gone through to make sure that the mouse is on in the control panel. What seems odd to me is that the whole thing isn't working. If it was jumping around or only partially working, I could say that there is something wrong with the hardware, but in this case i really think there is something system wise that I am missing. ???
As for the memory. I have gone through all the files that I can to see if there were some hidden things I could delete. I gained about 2 more gigs by doing that. I have not ran an anti-virus program through this yet. I'm thinking about running kaspersky on it. I just don't know too much about the program yet. but have heard good things from my not so computer savvy friends. I guess that means it's at least user friendly.
Is there a way to list on one page everything that is using up memory from highest to lowest amount? ( I hope I'm explaining that the right way).
Anyhow, thanks for the input guys, and sorry again about the confusion.

Also, It says that the mouse is working properly in the device manager. That is why I uninstalled the software for it and redownloaded it to see if there was an issue with it.

Ok, I think I have figured out the problem with the storage space. I just updated to windows 7 and I noticed that I have two folders now that say windows.old and windows.old000. so can I delete these folders without causing software issues? cause they are just my backed up info from vista right?
(still can't figure out the mouse thing though.)
