My friend has a Micron GoBook2 300mhz Laptop with the Std 32 memory of Ram. he wants to upgrade his memory. but according the the spec its max is 96 MB. So here the question.

1. Since Its kindof hard to find 64 MB 144 pin SOdimm. Can I purchase 128 MB and will the system recogize it. if so will it register at boot 96 MB or 160MB (On board ram + upgrade chip)

*Note:I can only find 128 MB ram chip were i live.

I would probably suggest you to install Sisoft Sandra first. Usually it will tell you the max memory you can have on it. My IBM spec on the site tells that it only support up to 512 MB but when I use Sandra, it tells me that my laptop support up to 1024 MB. So download the trial version of Sandra first and see the max you can get. If the max is 96 then putting 128 MB will make the laptop not to run.

Cool, so my laptop that's speced to only take 192 megs of ram (builtin 64 + 128 max addin) could be wrong? I could actually put a 256 chip in to make it 320 or something like that? That's a major help for a laptop, not only speed wise, but batterywise too, as ram is much easier on the battery than hd accesses.

Downloading the trial...

Ah....but the RAM required is EDO RAM, not SDRAM.

I don't think they make EDO RAM in sizes much higher than 64MB or 128MB. You better to check to make sure, as densities of RAM can also be an issue.

Well, assuming SOdimms in 256 size, it would work, but where in sisoft is the max number given? I see a few entries talking about my actual physical and system memory, and then information about how much ram is in each logical bank, but no "max system ram", I assume it's another entry, or calculation based off other entries...

mmnatas: You won't be able to put in a 256MB SODIMM.

Your system uses EDO RAM, NOT SDRAM. EDO RAM is not available in 256MB DIMMs (or anywhere near that size for that matter). You cannot mix SDRAM and EDO RAM.

How do you know it is EDO? When I look up my specific laptop on crucial.com, it lists the ram for my system using descriptions identical to PC100 SDRAM, EDO ram is described differently on their site for the specs. There are PC100 SOdimms, why is it *certain* that I need EDO ram?

Also, the EDO SOdims are extremely expensive, the chips that are recommended by the memory selector match the prices of PC100 SOdimms, so I can't see why it would be EDO and not SDram.

In the specifications given in the link above by evergreen96,

Memory: EDO DRAM 32MB soldered on the motherboard.

That says EDO RAM and not SDRAM to me.

I am not the person evergreen96 was referring to, if that was causing confusion.

That being said, I am almost certain my laptop does take the more standard PC1xx SOdimms, so where in SiSoft do I look for the max allowed ram? I have seen 256 sticks offered, and would pick one up in an instant if I could use it.

to check the max memory, go to the mainboard info and then you should be able to see that maximum installable memory.
